    L’année où la photographe Jillian Edelstein a eu 40 ans, elle a découvert une image de sa grand-tante Minna, dont elle ignorait l’existence. La photographie de Minna est devenue le catalyseur d’un voyage pour découvrir l’histoire de sa famille et la découverte d’une branche inconnue de sa famille vivant en Ukraine. Here and There documente l’odyssée familiale d’Edelstein et s’étend aux photographies réalisées tout au long de sa carrière, inextricablement liées par le fil du déplacement humain.

    The year in which photographer Jillian Edelstein turned 40 she came across an image of her great aunt Minna, of whose existence she had been unaware. The photograph of Minna became the catalyst for a journey to unearth her family history and the discovery of an unknown branch of her family living in Ukraine. Here and There documents Edelstein’s family odyssey and expands to encompass photographs made throughout her career, inextricably linked by the thread of human displacement.

Enchanté à l’idée de ce que je voyais comme des vacances prolongées, j’ai écrit une note sur la table de la cuisine : « Les US sont fermés, pourrait rester quelques jours de plus. J’étais tellement plein d’énergie que je n’ai pas fini la phrase, la note se terminait par « pourrait rester un pe-. ». La joie n’a pas duré longtemps.

    ‘I was visiting my parents when the news first spoke of a lockdown. Thrilled at the thought of what I saw as an extended vacation, I wrote a note on the kitchen table: ‘Unis are closed, might stay a few more days.’ I was so full of energy that I did not finish the sentence, the note ended at, ‘might stay a fe-.’ The joy did not last long.’

  • Herman Ellis Dyal : The Things Not Seen Are Eternal

    Pendant deux ans, Herman Ellis Dyal a photographié l’intérieur de l’église de San Antonio, au Texas, qui était le centre de la vie de sa famille depuis les années 1940. Les photographies qui en résultent montrent une grande partie du bâtiment maintenant inutilisé et forment sa première monographie, Les choses non vues sont éternelles.

    Over a period of two years, Herman Ellis Dyal photographed the interior of the church in San Antonio, Texas which had been the centre of his family’s life since the 1940s. The resulting photographs show much of the building now unused and form his first monograph, The Things Not Seen Are Eternal.

    For 17 years Preston Gannaway has been photographing a boy called EJ following the death of his mother. Her new book, Remember Me is about becoming and the passage of time, while exploring themes of mortality, loss and masculinity.

  • Abbie Trayler-Smith : Kiss It!

    Kiss it! est le fruit d’une longue collaboration entre la photographe Abbie Trayler-Smith et Shannon, une jeune femme obèse. Pendant 12 ans, Trayler-Smith a documenté le parcours de Shannon, de l’adolescence à l’âge adulte, naviguant entre les amitiés, la famille, les premiers copains, les soirées de bal, les vacances et les emplois. Shannon a été la principale source d’inspiration du projet à long terme de Trayler-Smith, « The Big O », qui examine la question de l’obésité chez les enfants et les jeunes adultes d’âge scolaire.

    Kiss it! Is the result of a long-term collaboration between photographer Abbie Trayler-Smith and Shannon, a young woman living with obesity. Over the course of 12-years, Trayler-Smith documented Shannon’s journey from teenager to adult — navigating friendships, family, first-boyfriends, prom nights, holidays and jobs. Shannon has been the central inspiration for Trayler-Smith’s long-term project, ‘The Big O’ examining the issue of obesity in school-age children and young adults.

    Lors des élections présidentielles américaines de 2016, la photographe japonaise Fumi Nagasaka a été intriguée par la campagne et le sud des États-Unis. Elle a vécu à New York pendant une décennie, mais en dépit de voyager dans le monde, n’a pas encore visité le reste des États-Unis. Tout cela a changé lorsque son amie, Tanya Rouse, l’a invitée dans sa ville natale de Dora, en Alabama. Nagasaka a continué à visiter Dora pendant plusieurs années, construisant progressivement une archive photographique de ses visites. Une sélection de ces photographies est incluse dans son nouveau livre Dora, Yerkwood, Walker County, Alabama.

    During the 2016 US Presidential elections Japanese photographer, Fumi Nagasaka, became intrigued by the rural and southern USA. She had lived in New York City for a decade but despite travelling the world, had yet to visit the rest of the US. All this changed when her friend, Tanya Rouse, invited her to her hometown of Dora, Alabama. Nagasaka continued to visit Dora over several years, gradually building a photographic archive of her visits. A selection of these photographs are included in her new book Dora, Yerkwood, Walker County, Alabama.

    The Uncanny by Belgian-Congolese photographer Léonard Pongo is a visual interpretation of his experiences in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Following friends and family in the country, Pongo became immersed in their vision. He let them decide what he should witness as he attempted to understand the place, reconnect with his heritage and reconcile his preconceptions with realities.

    Une exposition du projet, coïncidant avec la publication du livre, a été présentée du 1 décembre au 27 janvier à la galerie 10 14 de Londres.
    Permissions, the first monograph by photographer Emma Hardy, is a tender document of motherhood and childhood, love and yearning, and leaving home. The images in the book are gathered and distilled from Hardy’s personal archive and span a period of 20-years.

    An exhibition of the project, coinciding with the book’s publication, was on display from 1 December – 27 January at 10 14 Gallery, London.

    En mai 2021, Wong Chung-Wai a quitté Hong Kong avec sa famille pour commencer une nouvelle vie au Royaume-Uni. Au cours des six mois précédant leur départ, il a erré seul dans la ville en utilisant son appareil photo pour créer une empreinte des choses qu’il ne pouvait pas emporter avec lui.

    In May 2021, Wong Chung-Wai left Hong Kong with his family to begin a new life in the UK. During the six months prior to their departure he had wandered the city alone using his camera to create an imprint of those things he could not take with him.

    Over the course of 15 years, Magnum photojournalist Ian Berry travelled the globe to document the inextricable links between landscape, life and water. This new book brings together a selection of the resulting images which collectively tell the story of man’s complex relationship with water — at a time when climate change demonstrates just how precariously water and life are intertwined.

    Publié à l’occasion du vingtième anniversaire de l’invasion américaine de l’Irak, Happy Tidings of Benevolence rassemble les photographies de Moises Saman prises en Irak durant cette période et les années suivantes, avec des documents et des textes relatifs à la guerre. Explorant la construction, à travers l’image et le langage, de récits contradictoires de la guerre, le livre représente l’aboutissement des vingt années de travail de Moises Saman en Irak.

    Published to coincide with the twentieth anniversary of the US-led invasion of Iraq, Glad Tidings of Benevolence brings together Moises Saman’s photographs taken in Iraq during this period and the following years, with documents and texts relating to the war. Exploring the construction—through image and language—of competing narratives of the war, the book represents the culmination of Saman’s twenty years of work across Iraq.

  • Andrea Gjestvang : Atlantic Cowboy

    La photographe Andrea Gjestvang s’est rendue sur les îles Féroé pour documenter l’impact d’une pénurie de femmes sur le territoire. Son projet, réalisé sur six ans, représente l’homme traditionnel — le cowboy de l’Atlantique — et la périphérie géographique et sociale qu’il habite.

    Photographer Andrea Gjestvang journeyed to the Faroe Islands to document the impact of a shortage of women on the territory. Her project, created over 6-years, depicts the traditional man—the Atlantic Cowboy—and the geographical and social periphery he inhabits.

  • Adam Ianniello : Angels Point

    Angels Point est une falaise du parc Elysian, le plus ancien de Los Angeles. En 2017, Adam Ianniello a commencé à photographier ce désert surplombant l’étalement de béton de la ville avec son appareil photo grand format. Les photographies en noir et blanc qui en résultent, prises sur une période de trois ans, capturent le sublime le moins vu au milieu de l’une des plus grandes villes d’Amérique.

    Angels Point is a cliff’s edge in Elysian Park, the oldest park in Los Angeles. In 2017, Adam Ianniello began photographing this wilderness overlooking the concrete sprawl of the city with his large-format camera. The resulting black and white photographs, taken over a period of three years, capture the lesser-seen sublime in the midst of one of America’s largest cities.
