“It would be easy when considering the work of the photographer Calum Angus MacKay, to wax lyrically about his cultural background: being raised on a small croft on the remote Island of Lewis in the Western Isles of Scotland; working by day as a farmer, tending his flock, and sitting by the fireside after a hard day’s work. It’s the stuff today’s visual artist should be made of; authentically non-metropolitan, remotely rural, and combining manual labour with a passion for art.
Yet these factors do inherenthy inform the nature and complexion of the work of an artist like MacKay. However he is no “primitive” -the word being used advisedly. In fact he is very conscious of the tensions that exist between a so-called authentic cultural background and the production of cosmopolitan contemporary art. In this sense, the images he produces, mysterious, sombre and raw, generated from his experiences of animal and fish hubandry, retain a vernacular identity uncorrupted by affectation. When he chooses to work with the carcasses of animals, horeses heads or the remnants of fish, the subsequent images, orchesstrated with great sensitivity, do not conform to any bland notions of ruralism, but provide a rich visual vocabuloary reflective of the artist’s fertile imagination.
Here is someone who uses the toolsof his trade with great precision and conviction, and who creates photographic tableaux which remain culturally grounded, yet fully opebn to metaphorical interpretation.
In putting together this publication and accompagnying exhibition Portfollio Gallery and Ffotogallery intend that ISOLATE will extend the work of this intriging and innovative photographer to a wider audience.” (extract from the foreword by Christopher Coppock, Director of Ffotogallery & Gloria Chalmers, Director of Porfolio Gallery)
