La photographe Désirée van Hoek a fait du centre-ville de Los Angeles son espace de travail. Après « Skid Row » (2015) et « Notes on Downtown » (2022), « Talking about LA » est son troisième livre sur le cœur historique de la métropole américaine. Cette fois, Van Hoek se concentre sur la typographie autour de Broadway, l’artère dynamique qui divise la ville entre l’est et l’ouest, et qui a connu d’innombrables transformations au fil des ans. Elle fait équipe avec l’écrivain et historien local Norman M. Klein, qui, sur la base de films (noirs), de littérature et de mémoire personnelle, a écrit un essai sur l’effacement de la mémoire dans le quartier.

After ‘Skid Row’ (2015) and ‘Notes on Downtown’ (2022), ‘Talking about LA’ is her third book about the historic core of the American metropolis. This time, Van Hoek focuses on the typography around Broadway, the vibrant thoroughfare that divides the city in east and west, and that has seen countless transformations over the years. She teams up with local writer and historian Norman M. Klein, who, on the basis of (noir) films, literature, and personal memory, wrote an essay about the erasure of memory in the neighbourhood.
