In 1941 the Limited Editions Club of New York commissioned Edward Weston to illustrate photographically a special edition of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. […] Weston and his wife Charis Wilson traveled over 20,000 miles through 24 states, primarily in the South and East. Through the bayous and abandoned plantations of Louisiana, to the hill country of Kentucky, to Whitman’s birthplace on Long Island and then back out West, Weston saw and photographed with the voracity of vision for which he is so remarkable. […] The Westons’ trip was cut short by Pearl Harbor, at which time the returned to their home in Carmel, California, to develop, print and select the best of Weston’s work. Seventy-three prints were finally sent to the Limited Editions Club, and forty-nine of these were chosen to be included in the book, which was published in 1942 in a limited edition of 1500. This Paddington Press edition contains the complete text and every photograph from the Limited Editions volume. Many of the prints have not been reproduced since they were originally published. (Extrait de la jaquette intérieure) ; introduction de Richard Ehrlich, photos en n.b. Exemplaire avec usures d’usage, jaquette légèrement déchirée sur le haut et une légère marque d’étagère sur la tranche de queue.
