Il y a près de trente ans, ma sœur aînée Cecilia a tenté de se suicider dans une clinique psychiatrique. Elle avait 23 ans et luttait depuis longtemps contre les maladies mentales et les troubles de l’alimentation. Quatre jours plus tard, elle est décédée en soins intensifs. Il s’agissait du deuxième décès dans la famille. Trois ans plus tôt, notre père s’était ôté la vie de la même façon.
Dans la période tumultueuse qui a suivi sa mort, ma mère et moi avons fouillé ses affaires. Presque rien n’avait été épargné, à part quelques objets pouvant tenir dans une boîte en carton. La boîte avec ses effets personnels est restée intacte depuis. Pour le travail sur ce livre, je l’ai ouverte à nouveau.

Almost thirty years ago, my older sister Cecilia tried to take her own life in a psychiatric clinic. She was twenty-three years old and had been fighting mental illness and eating disorders for a long time. Four days later she died in intensive care. This was the second death in the family. Three years earlier, our father had taken his own life in the same way.
In the tumultuous time that followed her death, my mother and I went through her belongings. Almost nothing had been saved, apart from a few things that could fit in a cardboard box. The box with her belongings has remained untouched ever since. For the work on this book I have opened it again.
