« En m’insérant dans le récit pictural de ma mère, trouvé dans son album photo, ses histoires sont devenues les miennes. À travers des photomontages numériques, j’ai juxtaposé de vieilles photographies extraites des archives familiales de ma mère dans la vingtaine et la trentaine, pour reconstruire une nouvelle histoire et construire le pont, où elle est moi et je suis elle. J’ai refait les photos de ma mère au même endroit où elle avait été photographiée, portant les mêmes vêtements et imitant les mêmes poses et expressions pour renouer avec son esprit. Ma reconnexion avec ma défunte mère est devenue un substitut au manque de mémoire par la manipulation visuelle. Ainsi, étudier et reproduire visuellement mon adoption du rôle de mère auprès de ma sœur cadette après la mort de notre mère, ainsi qu’explorer des stratégies de camouflage dans des actes autobiographiques. » — Lebohang Kganye
Nous sommes ravis d’annoncer la publication de Ke Lefa Laka / Her-story de Lebohang Kganye. Composé de deux volumes (le volume 2 est disponible ici) dans notre série One Picture Book, cet important corpus a été créé en 2012-2013.
Le travail de Kganye est centré sur l’histoire personnelle et familiale. Sa série Ke Lefa Laka : Her-story découle du deuil causé par la perte de sa mère, tout en maintenant un lien avec elle et l’histoire générationnelle. Le titre se traduit par « c’est mon héritage » dans seSotho. Kganye explique : « Ce travail est venu de lui-même, il s’est en quelque sorte enfanté à travers moi. »
Lebohang Kganye est née en 1990 à Johannesburg, en Afrique du Sud, où elle vit et travaille actuellement. Kganye a reçu son introduction à la photographie au Market Photo Workshop, à Johannesburg, en 2009 et a terminé le programme de photographie avancée en 2011. Elle a obtenu un diplôme en beaux-arts de l’Université de Johannesburg en 2014 et fait actuellement sa maîtrise en beaux-arts à l’Université Witwatersrand. Parmi les prix, citons le Grand Prix Images Vevey 2021/22, le Prix Art Paulo Cunha e Silva 2020, le Prix Camera Austria 2019 et le finaliste de la Rolex Mentor & Protégé Arts Initiative 2019.

“By inserting myself into my mother’s pictorial narrative, found in her photo album—her stories became ours. Through digital photomontages, I juxtaposed old photographs retrieved from the family archives of my mother in her 20s and 30s, to reconstruct a new story and build the bridge, where she is me and I am her. I restaged my mother’s photographs in the same location she had been photographed, wearing the same clothes and mimicking the same poses and expressions to reconnect with her spirit. My reconnection with my late mother became a substitute for the paucity of memory through visual manipulation. Thus, studying and visually emulating my adoption of the role of mother to my younger sister after our mother’s death, as well as an exploration of masquerading strategies in autobiographical acts.” — Lebohang Kganye
We are thrilled to announce the publication of Ke Lefa Laka / Her-story by Lebohang Kganye. Comprising two volumes (Volume 2 is available here) in our One Picture Book series, this important body of work was created in 2012-2013.

The title translates to “it’s my legacy” in seSotho. Kganye explains, “That work just came on its own, somehow it gave birth to itself through me.”
