I am a photographer deeply inspired by the writings of Virginia Woolf (1882-1941). This photobook is a celebration of the writer and her distinctive way of seeing the world. My images explore places and female figures with a gentle touch, lingering on moments that often slip by unnoticed.
Virginia Woolf had synesthesia, meaning she could involuntarily connect different senses—for example, seeing colors triggered by sounds or words. I understand this as I’ve always seen letters and numbers in color and assumed everyone did too.
While studying English, I delved deeply into Woolf’s writing and absorbed the words without needing to grasp every detail. I was captivated by her creativity, her thoughts on writing, love, time’s elasticity, and the fleeting nature of the present.
The title of the book, Butterfly Powder, was one of Woolf’s favourite phrases (1), which can be found in The Waves and in her Diary.
Butterfly Powder reflects my connection with Woolf’s life and work, explored through my synesthetic and personal experiences. It is a sensory journey where I visually depict the impact of words and blend impressions from different senses. This work also touches on Woolf’s fear of being trapped, physically or emotionally. Ultimately, it celebrates the freedom to be oneself.
