Animé d’une curiosité passionnée pour les gens, l’artiste et photographe allemand Michael Wolf a commencé sa carrière comme photojournaliste. Pour son examen final d’étudiant, Wolf a présenté une série de photographies réalisées dans la ville minière de Bottrop-Ebel, située dans la région de la Ruhr en Allemagne, au cours de visites répétées qu’il y effectua en 1976. À travers les diverses images des habitants de la ville et de leur quotidien — fêtes, sociabilité, jeux, travail — il saisit non seulement un sentiment de normalité, mais aussi le lent déclin économique de la région, déjà perceptible en filigrane.

Having a passionate curiosity about people, German artist and photographer Michael Wolf began his career as a photojournalist. For his final exam as a student, Wolf submitted a series of photographs taken in the coal mining town of Bottrop-Ebel, located in Germany s Ruhr District, over the course of continuous visits he made to the area in 1976. In the various images of the town s inhabitants and their everyday lives celebrating, socialising, playing, working he captures not only a sense of normalcy, but also the region s gradual economic decline, already pervasive just under the surface.
