En octobre, alors que nous étions à Bristol pour l’événement BOP de la Fondation, Martin, Caroline et moi nous sommes réunis afin de sélectionner l’editing de cette nouvelle édition 2026 de Small World.
In October, when we were down in Bristol for the Foundation’s BOP event, Martin, Caroline and I got together to select the edit for this new 2026 edition of Small World.
C’était presque devenu une tradition : à chaque réimpression de l’ouvrage, nous changions la couverture et ajoutions un certain nombre de nouvelles photographies que Martin avait redécouvertes ou prises récemment. Au fil des années, Martin et moi avons réalisé six éditions différentes du livre — chacune subtilement distincte, et chacune dotée d’une nouvelle couverture. Pour cette édition, nous avons ajouté huit nouvelles images, dont cinq réalisées en 2025 et trois plus anciennes. De retour à Stockport dans les semaines suivantes, j’ai ajusté la séquence afin d’intégrer ces nouvelles images, je l’ai envoyée à Martin pour approbation, puis je l’ai transmise à EBS, nos imprimeurs en Italie.
It had become almost a tradition that with every reprint of the book we would change the cover and add in a number of new photos that Martin had rediscovered or taken recently. Over the years, Martin and I made six different editions of the book – each subtly different and each with a new cover. For this edition we added in eight new images, five taken in 2025 and three earlier images. Back in Stockport over the following weeks I adjusted the sequence to accommodate these new images, sent it over to Martin for his approval and then sent it off to EBS, our printers in Italy.

Prolongeant le projet initial, Edgar Martins a photographié à travers les États-Unis dans huit États distincts et à travers seize endroits différents. Ces sites soigneusement étudiés ont mis en évidence l’ampleur et l’impact de la crise sur l’industrie de la construction américaine. Abordant le projet comme une intervention photographique dans une crise, les images qui en résultent vont au-delà de la pure investigation formelle ou de la documentation. Son intérêt est de convoquer une conjonction inquiétante de réalisme et de fiction — « couper dans le réel ».
Edgar Martins was initially commissioned by The New York Times to photograph the fallout from the US subprime mortgage crisis. Extending the project, he photographed across the United States in eight separate states and across sixteen different locations. These carefully researched sites exposed the extent and impact of the crisis on the US construction industry. Approaching the project as a photographic intervention into a crisis, the resulting images go beyond pure formal investigation or documentation. His interest is in summoning a disquieting conjunction of realism and fiction— »cutting in to the real. »

Paul Hart : Fragile
Fragile (2020-23) le dernier ouvrage du photographe Paul Hart est une réflexion personnelle sur la nature et a été réalisée dans le paysage près de chez lui en Angleterre. L’esthétique est enracinée dans la notion d’une conscience accrue du monde naturel, à la fois d’un engagement physique et d’un lien spirituel avec la terre. Tout en s’absorbant dans cette approche instinctive et viscérale, Hart a pris conscience de la beauté physique et de la vulnérabilité délicate de ces formes naturelles. Bien que les préoccupations de l’environnement et de la durabilité soient présentes partout, Fragile s’éloigne de l’étude centrale du lieu habituellement associée à son travail, pour évoquer une sensibilité éthérée plus abstraite.
Paul Hart’s latest body of work Fragile (2020-23) is a personal reflection on nature and was made in the landscape close to his home in England. The aesthetic is rooted in the notion of a heightened awareness of the natural world, of both a physical engagement and spiritual connection to the land. Whilst becoming absorbed in this instinctual, visceral approach, Hart has become acutely aware of both the physical beauty and delicate vulnerability of these natural forms. Although concerns of the environment and sustainability are present throughout, Fragile departs from the central study of place usually associated with his work, to evoke a more abstract ethereal sensibility.

En conséquence, la publicité était abondante et aventureuse; les nouveaux magazines couleur prospéraient et commandaient de la photographie comme jamais auparavant.
Colour Works is a collection of images Homer Sykes made during the 1980s and 90s. This was a golden period for magazine commissions; they were the Thatcher years. A gilded and confident yuppie generation spent freely, there was a new hedonistic, ‘never had it so cool’ loads of money mentality. As a result advertising was plentiful and adventurous; the new colour magazines prospered and commissioned photography as never before.

Bruce Gilden : The Circuit
