The photographs were taken during a trip through Hungary and Trans-Sylvania (Rumania) in the autumns of 1989 and 1990. Their main objective is not to tell the story about the changes in these coutntries. Standing among the emotional crowd in the square in front of the parliament building in Budapest on 23 October 1989, I witnessed the declaration of the republic and realized that to a large extent television has taken over the role of traditional documentary photography. Besides, it was their moment and not mine. Hundreds of Zenits and Practicas franticly did their jobs. That night I restricted myself to a picture o a somewhat elderly couple with a cendle in their hands on the edge of the happening, beaming.
