Les événements catastrophiques du 11 mars 2011 – le tremblement de terre, le tsunami et la fusion nucléaire qui a suivi de la centrale nucléaire de Fukushima Daiichi – ont été appelés « la triple catastrophe » au Japon. Parmi les premiers artistes à réagir à ces expériences figuraient les photographes. Certains ont tenté de documenter la dévastation, tandis que d’autres ont ruminé le sens et l’utilisation de la photographie à la suite d’une tragédie. Alors que les effets immédiats du tremblement de terre et du tsunami ont cédé la place à une catastrophe nucléaire, les artistes ont commencé à relever le défi de représenter une menace invisible qui fait appel à la mémoire collective d’Hiroshima et de Nagasaki. The catastrophic events of March 11, 2011–the earthquake, tsunami and ensuing nuclear meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant–have been called “the triple disaster” in Japan. Among the first artists to respond to these experiences were photographers. Some attempted to document the devastation, while others ruminated on the meaning and use of photography in the wake of tragedy. As the immediate effects of the earthquake and tsunami gave way to nuclear disaster, artists began to respond to the challenges of depicting an invisible threat that calls up the collective memory of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
