Le livre s’inspire des grandes archives de photographies d’Engström et combine ces portraits avec des roches immuables de l’ère glaciaire pour nous rappeler de toujours chercher notre propre anima.
Depuis que j’ai commencé à photographier il y a 30 ans, j’ai photographié des hommes. Pendant toutes ces années, j’ai aussi photographié à plusieurs reprises des personnes transgenres. Un autre motif récurrent pendant ces 30 années sont les autoportraits. Mes propres milliers de feuilles de contact me montrent une recherche de toute une vie, consciente et subconsciente, liée à l’identité et à la constante variabilité et transitoire liée à la condition humaine. En plus de ces images, le livre commence et se termine par des photographies de roches moraines. Ces roches ont été poussées vers l’avant par la calotte glaciaire. Lorsque la glace a fondu il y a 10.000 ans, ils se sont arrêtés là où ils sont maintenant à trouver. L’autoportrait élargi et le miroir dans d’autres est une façon d’aborder la renégociation historique qui est maintenant en cours concernant l’idée du mâle. -JH Engström
In times when society is starting to do a much needed and urgent re-examination of the very notions of gender, this is Engström´s personal, generous sometimes violent and desperate but always heartfelt contribution to this decisive discussion.
The book draws from Engström´s large archive of photographs and combines these portraits with Ice age immutable rocks to remind us to always look for our own anima.
Since I started photographing 30 years ago I have photographed men. During all these years I have also repeatedly photographed transgender persons. Another recurring motif during these 30 years are self-portraits. My own thousands of contact sheets show me a lifelong, both conscious and subconscious, search linked to identity and the constant changeability and transience connected to the human condition. In addition to these images, the book starts and ends with photographs of moraine rocks. These rocks were pushed forward by the ice sheet. When the ice melted 10.000 years ago they stopped where they are now to be found. The expanded self-portrait and the mirroring in others is a way to approach the historical renegotiation that is now taking place regarding the idea of the male. -JH Engström
