« C’était en 1999 et j’avais 39 ans, me sentant stagner dans ma carrière et dans ma vie, lorsque j’ai cessé de prendre des photos en noir et blanc et que j’ai plutôt pris des photos en couleur.
Libéré d’une sorte du lourd héritage de la photographie en noir et blanc, j’en suis venu à me sentir plus à l’aise en libérant l’obturateur destiné à divers sujets et scènes que je n’avais jamais photographiés auparavant en noir et blanc.
J’ai été surpris par la quantité d’informations contenues dans les négatifs couleur. De plus, une découverte étonnante pour moi était que le ciel, l’océan, les fleurs et les champs herbeux étaient représentés si vivement sur le papier à travers le processus de la chambre noire.
Sentant que c’était un nouveau départ pour ma propre photographie, j’ai commencé à voyager dans divers endroits à travers le Japon en portant à nouveau mon sac rempli de rouleaux de film couleur. Ashibetsu, Utashinai (Hokkaido); Kanita (Aomori), Kakunodate (Akita); Sanjo (Niigata); Iwai, Awakatsuyama, Onjuku (Chiba); Jogashima (Kanagawa); Saijo (Ehime); Surakathama (Kochi); Suo-oshima (Yamaguchi); Fukue (Nagasaki); et Naha (Okinawa)….
Cette année, maintenant 2017, alors que je me suis assis dans ma chambre noire fraîche et climatisée dans la chaleur insupportable de l’été juste avant la fin de la saison des pluies, j’avais hâte de revoir les photos de l’époque où la photographie couleur me semblait si fraîche. C’est un livre qui compile ces photographies, débordant de lumière de ces jours d’été. »

“It was in 1999 and I was 39 years old, feeling stagnant in both my career and life, when I quit taking black and white photographs and took up color film photography instead.
Liberated from a kind of heavy seriousness of black and white photography, I came to feel more at ease releasing the shutter aimed at various subjects and scenes I had never photographed before in black and white.
I was surprised at the quantity of information contained in color negatives. Moreover, an amazing discovery for me was that the sky, ocean, flowers, and grassy fields were represented so vividly on paper through the darkroom process.
Feeling that this was a new beginning for my own photography, I started to travel to various places across Japan again carrying my bag filled with rolls of color film. This year, now 2017, as I sat in my cool, air-conditioned darkroom in the unbearable summer heat just before the end of the rainy season, I longed to see again the photographs of when color photography seemed so fresh to me. This is a book compiling those photographs, overflowing with the light of those summer days.”
