The Queen, The Chairman and I a commencé par un livre de contes que Kurt Tong a fait pour ses filles. Kurt est né à Hong Kong en 1977, 5 ans avant que la Chine ne veuille la récupérer. Il a été envoyé au Royaume-Uni pour l’école, puis a épousé une femme écossaise et a fondé une famille là-bas. Ayant grandi entre différentes cultures, il a commencé à retracer l’histoire de sa famille afin de découvrir comment deux des personnes les plus influentes de l’histoire la Reine Victoria et le Président Mao ont affecté sa famille. En accordant la même importance aux nouvelles photos, trouvé des photos des deux côtés de la famille et l’écriture, le travail reconnecte Kurt Tong avec le Hong Kong du passé par le souvenir de ma famille étendue, humaniser les bouleversements politiques et sociaux qui ont amené sa famille à Hong Kong, puis au Royaume-Uni.
The Queen, The Chairman and I est une saga d’amour, d’espoir et de tragédie, un livre de contes qui révèle les secrets de la famille et l’impact des forces politiques et économiques sur les individus. Il traite des thèmes du multiculturalisme et de la migration, du patrimoine et de l’Empire ; photos en n.b. et en couleurs.

‘The Queen, the Chairman and I’ began with a storybook Kurt Tong made for his daughters. Kurt was born in the city of Hong Kong in 1977, 5 years before China wanted it back. He got sent to the UK for school and then married a Scottish girl and started a family there. Having grown up between different cultures, he begin to trace back the history of his family in a bid to find out how two of the most influential people in history affected my family. Paying equal importance to new photographs, found photographs from both sides of the family and writing, the work reconnects Kurt with the Hong Kong of the past through the recollection of my extended family, humanizing the political and social upheaval that brought his family to Hong Kong and eventually to the United Kingdom.
The Queen, The Chairman and I is a saga of love, hope, and tragedy: a storybook that both uncovers family secrets and reveals the impact of political and economic forces on individuals. It deals with themes of multiculturalism and migration, heritage and empire.
