En 1975, The Pennsylvania Gazette demanda à Mary Ellen Mark de réaliser un photo-reportage sur le tournage de Vol au-dessus d’un nid de coucou, que le réalisateur Milos Forman filmait alors entièrement sur site à l’hôpital d’État de l’Oregon. C’est là que la photographe entra en contact avec les femmes du Ward 81, une unité de sécurité maximale créée au sein de l’hôpital pour accueillir des femmes considérées comme dangereuses pour elles-mêmes ou pour la communauté.
En février 1976 — un an avant la fermeture définitive du service — Mary Ellen Mark, accompagnée de l’écrivaine et psychiatre Karen Folger Jacobs, passa un mois entier dans l’établissement pour documenter le quotidien des patientes. Trente ans après la publication de l’ouvrage qui rassemblait leur travail, Ward 81 — un reportage d’une profonde portée humaine autant que documentaire — est réédité par Damiani.

In 1975, The Pennsylvania Gazette asked Mary Ellen Mark to make a photo-reportage on the filming of One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which director Milos Forman was then shooting entirely on location at the Oregon State Hospital. That’s where the photographer came in touch with the women of Ward 81, a maximum-security unit created within the hospital in order to house women who were deemed dangerous to themselves or to the community.
In February 1976 – one year before the ward was definitely closed – Mary Ellen Mark, together with writer and psychiatrist Karen Folger Jacobs, spent a whole month in the facility to document the patients’ daily lives. Thirty years after the publication of the volume, which gathered their work, Ward 81 – a reportage of deep human as well as documentary impact – is being reissued by Damiani.
