  • Michael Ashkin : There will be two of you

‘There will be two of you’ réorganise et ajoute aux 133 images panoramiques originales des Meadowlands du New Jersey commandées par Okwui Enwezor pour Documenta 11 en 2002.

‘There will be two of you’ reorganises and adds to the original 133 panoramic images of the New Jersey Meadowlands commissioned by Okwui Enwezor for Documenta 11 in 2002. The black and white photographs were installed at Documenta as a wall grid, but are here restored to the sequence in which they were taken during a year of meandering walks. The Meadowlands have long been at the core of Ashkin’s visual imagination. In the accompanying text, “There will be two of you,” an enigmatic incident at the landscape’s symbolic center promises a redemptive allegory it cannot deliver.

» -Teju Cole

‘I am writing this note while you’re still asleep. It’s still early enough that I can open the windows in my room. By the time you read this, I’ll be at work. Please pardon the strange formality of writing to you when I could just have said to you in person what I want to say. But since I have failed to say it, it is reasonable to conclude that I am having some difficulty speaking.’ -Teju Cole

  • Melissa Shook : Daily Self-Portraits ; 1972-1973

-Melissa Shook

“It was important to let my unconscious, rather than my intellect, dictate the progression. For reasons I don’t entirely understand, being nude became part of the project early on. And working against that white wall, near the two front windows in the so-called living room, became a central point.” -Melissa Shook

  • Yael Eban & Matthew Gamber : Dead Ringer

In this digital world the tactility of the printed past becomes ever more intriguing. To consider where all these photos are, where they go, and what they mean is to tap into endless human histories, both big and small. Today there are almost too many images to process, make sense of, or to give proper attention. Even so, over the last one hundred plus years a wonderful trove has been left behind with which artists can create new worlds. Fetishizing and reevaluating vintage, vernacular photos has a well-trodden tradition. To find new insights and unique perspectives on the genre is rare. But even rarer is to find disparate images that have had separate journeys around the world only to reconvene back here in this collection.
