Learoyd est l’un des photographes contemporains les plus reconnus aujourd’hui et cette rétrospective représente une tournée de sa production depuis plus d’une décennie. Le travail de Richard Learoyd plonge ses racines dans le passé, à l’origine de la photographie, car il obtient ses images au moyen d’une chambre noire construite par lui-même dans laquelle il n’utilise normalement pas de négatif. Leurs portraits, étant faits avec ce processus, donnent lieu à une photographie grandeur nature. Cela impose la présence directe du dépeint et nous permet de l’approcher avec une proximité inhabituelle. L’exposition produite par la Fondation MAPFRE comprendra 52 œuvres provenant d’importantes collections publiques et privées, en plus du propre studio du photographe. L’échantillon comprend également une œuvre réalisée en Espagne.
Learoyd es uno de los fotógrafos contemporáneos más reconocidos en la actualidad y esta retrospectiva supone un recorrido por su producción de más de una década. La obra de Richard Learoyd hunde sus raíces en el pasado, en el origen de la fotografía, pues obtiene sus imágenes mediante una cámara oscura construida por él mismo en la que normalmente no usa negativo. Sus retratos, al estar hechos con este proceso, dan lugar a una fotografía de tamaño natural. Esto impone la presencia directa del retratado y nos permite aproximarnos a él con una cercanía inusual. La exposición producida por Fundación MAPFRE contará con 52 obras provenientes de importantes colecciones públicas y privadas, además del propio estudio del fotógrafo. En la muestra también se incluye alguna obra realizada en España.
The experience of looking at Richard Learoyd’s photographs can be “elemental, ritualistic even, like the drawing of blood,” writes Sandra Phillips in this catalog for an exhibition at Fundación MAPFRE in Spain, co-published in English by Fraenkel Gallery. Bringing together more than 70 photographs from the past ten years, the book includes portraits of clothed or nude models made with the massive camera obscura Learoyd built in his studio, which produces grainless, one of a kind color photographs. Also featured are landscapes made in California, England and Spain, as well as still lifes of animals and flowers. Presenting the highlights of Learoyd’s career, these images are rooted in the history of art, but were made with the clear intention of challenging the authority of painting.
