Animé d’une curiosité passionnée pour les gens, l’artiste et photographe allemand Michael Wolf a commencé sa carrière comme photojournaliste. Pour son examen final d’étudiant, Wolf a présenté une série de photographies réalisées dans la ville minière de Bottrop-Ebel, située dans la région de la Ruhr en Allemagne, au cours de visites répétées qu’il y effectua en 1976. Having a passionate curiosity about people, German artist and photographer Michael Wolf began his career as a photojournalist. For his final exam as a student, Wolf submitted a series of photographs taken in the coal mining town of Bottrop-Ebel, located in Germany s Ruhr District, over the course of continuous visits he made to the area in 1976. In the various images of the town s inhabitants and their everyday lives celebrating, socialising, playing, working he captures not only a sense of normalcy, but also the region s gradual economic decline, already pervasive just under the surface.

Look at Me, I Look at Water a été conçu en 1999 à l’initiative de la Société Heiner Müller, lorsque le nom de Boris Mikhaïlov fut retrouvé dans l’un des carnets de Heiner Müller. Avec ce livre, Boris Mikhaïlov poursuit, tant sur le plan thématique que conceptuel, ce qu’il avait amorcé avec son livre d’artiste Unfinished Dissertation en 1985. Les photographies sont accompagnées de commentaires manuscrits en russe qui, ensemble, donnent l’impression d’un album privé relatant des épisodes d’un chapitre de la vie de l’artiste.
Look at Me, I Look at Water was composed in 1999 at the suggestion of the Heiner Müller-Society when Boris Mikhailov’s name was found in one of Heiner Müller’s notebooks. With this book Boris Mikhailov is continuing, thematically and conceptionally, what he began with his artist’s book Unfinished Dissertation in 1985. The photographs are accompanied by handwritten Russian commentaries, which together give the impression of a private album which narrates stories from a chapter in the artist’s life.

This remarkable album is a collaboration between Rudy Burckhardt, one of the great New York photographers of the 1930s and 40s, and his companion and lifelong friend, the poet and dance critic Edwin Denby. Previously unpublished, and reproduced here in facsimile, New York, N. Why? Is a unique, handmade book containing 67 photographs and seven sonnets. Now in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, it contains many of Burckhardt s best-known images, dazzlingly sequenced into three urban themes – advertising, pedestrians, and street furniture.
