Larry Towell photographed the Old Colony Mennonites in rural Ontario and Mexico between 1990 and 1999. The resulting black and white photographs—accompanied by an extensive text drawn from diary notes and ‘the silt of the memory’—formed Towell’s landmark book, The Mennonites, first published in 2000. This revised and updated second edition revisits the project and includes 40 previously unpublished photographs.

« De 2021 à 2023, j’ai photographié autour de deux réservoirs dans la vallée centrale de Californie en train de vivre une méga-aventure de vingt-trois ans. Le réservoir tisse ensemble des images des lacs asséchants et des personnes cherchant une journée tranquille à la plage. Ils apportent leurs chiens, bébés et poussettes, chambres à air, kayaks, radeaux, parapluies, glacières et tentes. Au fur et à mesure que l’été avance et que la ligne de flottaison recule, les familles marchent plus d’un mile pour atteindre la plage. Parfois, le ciel est coloré par la fumée des incendies de forêt à proximité. “From 2021 to 2023, I photographed around two reservoirs in the Central Valley of California experiencing a twenty-three year megadrought. The Reservoir weaves together images of the drying lakes and people seeking a leisurely day at the beach. They bring their dogs, babies and baby carriages, inner tubes, kayaks, rafts, umbrellas, coolers, and tents. As the summer progresses and the waterline recedes, families walk over a mile to reach the beach. At times, the sky is colored with smoke from nearby forest fires.
