Gregory Halpern : Omaha Sketchbook (2nd ed)

Compilé sur une quinzaine d’années de photographie à Omaha, au Nebraska, le livre constitue une méditation prémonitoire sur l’Amérique, les hommes et les garçons qui l’habitent, et la mécanique de l’agression, de l’inadéquation et du pouvoir. Dans des planches vaguement collées qui reproduisent ses carnets de croquis en papier, Halpern prend plaisir à la dissonance et à l’harmonie inattendue, jouant sur un sentiment de répulsion et d’attraction simultanées pour le lieu. Halpern a considérablement modifié la première version du livre avec une nouvelle couverture et trente-cinq photographies inédites, donnant ainsi vie à son idée originale que ce projet est un carnet de croquis qu’il consultera et révisera périodiquement.
In this new edition of Omaha Sketchbook, Gregory Halpern returns to his lyrical yet equivocal account of the American heartland. Compiled over fifteen years of photographing Omaha, Nebraska, the book forms a prescient meditation on America, the men and boys who inhabit it, and the mechanics of aggression, inadequacy, and power. In loosely collaged spreads that reproduce his construction-paper sketchbooks, Halpern takes pleasure in dissonance and unexpected harmony, playing on a sense of simultaneous repulsion and attraction to the place. Halpern has significantly altered the first iteration of the book with a new cover and thirty-five previously unseen photographs, breathing life into his original notion that this project is a working sketchbook he will return to and revise periodically.

Using flashes of colour as a foil for meticulously detailed black and white, the subjects and their underlying symbolism whisper to both the past and present of the technological, explorative, concealed, and classified. Image-making teeters between the ability to capture microscopic detail and the capability to cause disruption on a mass scale.
