Cette monographie raconte l’extraordinaire histoire de Charles (Chas) Gerretsen (1943), un photographe exceptionnel. En plus de travailler comme reporter de guerre en Asie, il a également travaillé comme photographe à Hollywood, où il a photographié le plateau du film classique « Apocalypse Now » et de nombreuses stars de cinéma dans leurs premières années. La photographie de Chas Gerretsen, dont l’histoire se lit comme un livre passionnant, est encore peu connue aux Pays-Bas. Ayant grandi à Groningen, il a rapidement cherché l’aventure à dix-huit ans.
Le livre est publié à l’occasion de la première exposition rétrospective de son œuvre, une première mondiale ! L’exposition du même nom Starring Chas Gerretsen est présentée au Nederlands Fotomuseum du 15 octobre 2021 au 22 avril 2022. Avec cela, le Nederlands Fotomuseum réalise pour la première fois une exposition et une publication d’un photographe de collection encore vivant. Ses archives spéciales ont été acquises en 1995 et au cours des dernières années, des travaux ont été effectués sur l’organisation et la numérisation des archives. Un processus auquel Chas Gerretsen et sa partenaire Monika Pfandzelter ont apporté une contribution très précieuse en partageant toutes les histoires avec le Nederlands Fotomuseum.
This monograph tells the extraordinary life story of Charles (Chas) Gerretsen (1943), an exceptional photographer. In addition to working as a war reporter in Asia, he also worked as a photographer in Hollywood, where he photographed the set of the film classic ‘Apocalypse Now’ and many film stars in their early years. The photography of Chas Gerretsen, whose life story reads like an exciting book, is still hardly known in the Netherlands. Growing up in Groningen, he quickly sought adventure as an eighteen-year-old.
The book is published on the occasion of the first retrospective exhibition of his œuvre, a world first! The exhibition of the same name Starring Chas Gerretsen can be seen in the Nederlands Fotomuseum from 15 October 2021 to 22 April 2022. With this, the Nederlands Fotomuseum is realizing for the first time an exhibition and publication by a Collection Photographer who is still alive. His special archive was acquired in 1995 and in recent years work has been done on organizing the archive and digitizing it. A process to which Chas Gerretsen and his partner Monika Pfandzelter have made a very valuable contribution by sharing all the stories with the Nederlands Fotomuseum.
