Dennis Dinneen est né en 1927 dans le petit bourg de Macroom, dans le comté de Cork. En 1944, il étudiait la médecine à l’University College Cork lorsque son père est décédé à l’âge de 39 ans. Il a abandonné son rêve de devenir médecin pour retourner chez lui pour aider sa mère Abby à s’occuper de ses trois jeunes frères. C’est à cette époque que le jeune Dennis a commencé à développer une autre passion: la photographie.
Avec sa femme Claire, Dennis a repris la direction du bar familial Dinneen’s dans les années 1950. Dennis, Claire et leurs cinq enfants vivaient à l’étage, avec une pièce tout au fond du bar faisant office de cuisine familiale. Le bar lui-même était long et étroit, avec une porte juste à droite au bout du comptoir menant à une pièce qui devint son studio photographique. C’est dans cette petite pièce que Macroom Photographic Services a été fondée en 1953.
Au cours des trois décennies suivantes, Dennis a fourni des photos pour les passeports et les permis de conduire, a pris des portraits individuels et familiaux et a capturé des images des clients du bar. Développant ses compétences de photographe en dehors du studio, il a également photographié des mariages, des cérémonies religieuses, des productions théâtrales, des événements sportifs et une variété d’autres occasions locales. Au cours de sa carrière de photographe, Dennis a exposé environ 50 000 négatifs, dont environ 30 000 ont été détruits, ainsi que des tirages et du matériel, lorsqu’un incendie a ravagé le bar en 1981. Les vestiges de la chambre noire du studio sont encore présents à ce jour. À peine reconnaissable, dans le grenier à l’étage à l’arrière du bar.
Plus qu’un simple photographe, Dennis était un publicain et un taximan local; il serait votre photographe de mariage et le chauffeur qui vous conduirait de chez vous à l’église. Il était la vie et l’âme modestes et subtiles de chaque fête à laquelle il allait. C’était un chanteur et conteur talentueux, avec de nombreuses histoires à raconter et de nombreuses chansons à chanter, dont la voix retentissante captivait ses auditeurs.
Dennis est décédé en 1985, laissant le bar à ses fils, Lawrence et Dennis. Avec leurs familles, ils dirigent toujours le bar de la rue Main à Macroom, où il continue de servir de point focal pour la communauté locale. -Ciara Dinneen

Dennis Dinneen was born in 1927 in the small market town of Macroom, County Cork. In 1944 he was studying medicine at University College Cork when his father passed away aged just 39. He abandoned his dream of becoming a doctor to return home to help his mother Abby care for his three younger brothers. It was around this time that young Dennis began to develop another passion: photography.
Along with his wife Claire, Dennis took over the running of the family bar, Dinneen’s, in the 1950s. Dennis, Claire, and their five children lived upstairs, with a room at the very back of the bar functioning as the family kitchen. The bar itself was long and narrow, with a door just to the right at the end of the counter leading into a room that became his photographic studio. It was in this small room that Macroom Photographic Services was founded in 1953.
For the next three decades, Dennis provided photos for passports and driving licences, took individual and family portraits, and captured images of the bar’s patrons. Developing his skills as a photographer outside the studio, he also photographed weddings, religious ceremonies, theatre productions, sporting events, and a variety of other local occasions. Over his career as a photographer, Dennis exposed an estimated 50,000 negatives, of which around 30,000 were destroyed, along with prints and equipment, when a fire ripped through the bar in 1981. The remnants of the studio’s darkroom are present to this day, though barely recognisable, in the upstairs loft at the back of the bar.
More than just a photographer, Dennis was a publican and local taximan; he would be your wedding photographer and the chauffeur that drove you from your home to the church. He was the unassuming, subtle life and soul of every party he went to. He was a talented singer and storyteller, with many stories to tell and many songs to sing, whose resounding voice captivated his listeners.
Dennis passed away in 1985, leaving the bar to his sons, Lawrence and Dennis. Along with their families, they still run the bar on Main Street in Macroom, where it continues to serve as a focal point for the local community. -Ciara Dinneen
