Le livre rassemble 99 + 1 photographies, dont plusieurs inédites. Il présente une synthèse organique du travail complexe de Giovanni Chiaramonte sur la représentation du paysage et la vision urbaine, fruit d’une longue période de réflexion théorique.
Dans cette exploration, l’Italie est le point d’observation privilégié. Son territoire, qui apparaît comme une stratification des cultures et des civilisations, raconte l’histoire de tout l’Occident. Dans le regard du photographe, le paysage italien est l’objectif à travers lequel il montre les nombreux endroits qu’il explore.
La deuxième partie du volume rassemble un véritable pèlerinage de la mémoire d’Athènes et de Rome à travers l’Europe jusqu’au Bosphore et à Jérusalem, étape riche de signification dans son voyage dans l’histoire.
La dernière section, avec des textes de Corrado Benigni et Teju Cole, d’autre part, est consacrée au paysage américain : les États-Unis et l’Amérique centrale, où l’auteur trace le chemin de l’Occident, les raisons de construire une nouvelle ville européenne en accord avec une vision de l’humanité correspondant à sa nature.

The book brings together 99 + 1 photographs, many of them previously unpublished. It presents an organic synthesis of the complex work of Giovanni Chiaramonte on the representation of the landscape and the urban view, the fruit of a lengthy period of theoretical reflection.
In this exploration, Italy is the privileged point of observation. Its territory, which appears as a stratification of cultures and civilisations, tells the story of the entire West. In the photographer’s gaze the Italian landscape is the lens through which to show the many places he explores.
The second part of the volume brings together a veritable pilgrimage from the memory of Athens and Rome through Europe to the Bosporus and Jerusalem, a stage rich in significance in his journey into history.
The last section, with texts by Corrado Benigni and Teju Cole, on the other hand, is devoted to the American landscape: the United States and Central America, where the author traces the path of the West, the reasons for building a new European city in keeping with a vision of humanity corresponding to its nature.
