Herbert List était fasciné par les « humains artificiels », figures grandeur nature moulées en cire, exposées au Panoptikum de Prater, à Vienne.
En 1944, il a photographié ces œuvres de cire, les représentant comme des « cadavres mis en place et barbouillés de maquillage – figés dans des poses de la plus haute intensité, ils sont les habitants d’un château de la Belle au bois dormant ». List a pris une série de scènes de contes de fées, de tableaux historiques et de sujets médicaux et les a combinés avec un texte incisif pour créer un livre illustré qui est maintenant publié pour la première fois, plus de soixante-quinze ans plus tard, dans une édition bibliophile basée sur le projet original de List. Un volume de commentaires accompagne l’œuvre dans le contexte de son œuvre artistique et l’histoire du Panoptikum de Präuscher à Vienne, où l’intérêt scientifique populaire a été mélangé au XIXe siècle avec une fascination sensationnaliste pour l’érotisme et exotica.
Herbert List (1903-1975) émigre d’Allemagne en 1936 comme artiste influencé par le surréalisme et la nouvelle objectivité. Il a ensuite pris des photos dans le sud de l’Europe et a vécu à Athènes jusqu’à l’invasion allemande. Après la guerre, il s’intéresse de plus en plus au portrait, au reportage et à la photographie de rue et travaille pour l’agence Magnum ; sous la direction de Monika Faber, Andreas Nierhaus et Peer-Olaf Richter, avec des textes de Monika Faber, Erich Kästner, Sandra Mühlenberend, Andreas Nierhaus, Arne Reimer, Peer-Olaf Richter, Esther Ruelfs, Werner Michael Schwarz et Susanne Winkler, photos en n.b.

Herbert List was fascinated by the ”artificial humans“—life-size figures moulded in wax—on display at the Panoptikum in Vienna’s Prater.
In 1944, he photographed these waxworks, depicting them as “corpses set in position and daubed with make-up—frozen in poses of the utmost intensity, they are inhabitants of a Sleeping Beauty castle.” List took a string of fairytale scenes, historical tableaux, and medical subjects and combined them with a trenchant text to create an illustrated book that is now being published for the first time, more than seventy-five years later, in a bibliophile edition based on List’s original draft. An accompanying volume of commentary places the work in the context of his artistic œuvre and the history of Präuscher’s Panoptikum in Vienna, where popular scientific interest was mixed in the nineteenth century with a sensationalist fascination for erotica and exotica.
Herbert List (1903 – 1975) emigrated from Germany in 1936 as an artist influenced by surrealism and the New Objectivity. He then took pictures in southern Europe and lived in Athens until the German invasion. After the war, he became increasingly interested in portraiture, reportage, and street photography and worked for the Magnum agency ; edited by Monika Faber, Andreas Nierhaus et Peer-Olaf Richter, with texts by Monika Faber, Erich Kästner, Sandra Mühlenberend, Andreas Nierhaus, Arne Reimer, Peer-Olaf Richter, Esther Ruelfs, Werner Michael Schwarz and Susanne Winkler.
