“Il y avait dans l’appartement où je résidais d’énormes radiateurs revêtus d’une bonne dizaine de couches de peinture blanche, qui diffusaient une chaleur étouffante. La seule solution était l’ouverture régulière des fenêtres. À New York, l’hiver, il fait très froid dehors et trop chaud à l’intérieur.
Voici les premières images que je fixais dans mon esprit.
Les 6 jours suivants, du petit jour à la grande nuit noire, j’errai sans but, limitant ma promenade à Manhattan. J’arpentai, souvent sans savoir où je me trouvais, les rues de Little Italy, Time Square, le Bronx, Harlem, Battery Park, Soho, Chelsea, Central Park, Broadway, Canal Street, Lower East Side, East village… Je découvrais une ville, quasiment en ruine, belle, excitante, vivante. Mon œil et mon cerveau me commandaient d’appuyer sans discernement sur le déclencheur. La crasse, le dénuement, la richesse, le luxe se côtoyaient, se démenaient, s’opposaient. Tout était beau et intéresssant. Tout était si différent.

“In the apartment where I was staying, there were huge radiators coated with a dozenz of coats of white paint, which diffused a stiffing heat. The only solution was to regularly open the windows. In New York, the winter is very cold outside and steaming hot inside.
These are the first images printed in my mind.
During the following 6 days, from dawn to dusk, I wandered aimlessly around Manhattan. I strolled the streets, often without knowing where I was, from those of Little Italy, Time Square, le Bronx, Harlem, Battery Park, Soho, Chelsea, Central Park, Broadway, Canal Street, Lower East Side, East village… I discovered a city almost in ruins, beautiful, exciting, alive. I let my eye and my brain guide me while I uncritically pressed the shutter button of my camera. The dirt, the poverty, the wealth and luxury were all mixed together yet contradicting and opposing each other. Everything was beautiful and interesting. Everything was so different.
