Cet album photo est un hommage charmant et ludique à l’un des grands maîtres de la photographie japonaise : Shoji Ueda. Portant une lettre d’introduction écrite en japonais, le photographe néerlandais Jeremy Stigter a visité Shoji dans la préfecture de Tottori à l’automne 1993. Par la lettre, Stigter a posé trois questions et a demandé à Ueda de prendre ses photos dans les dunes voisines qui avaient servi de lieu de tant de photos inoubliables de Ueda. En chemin, ils ont ramassé un parapluie repliable qui, incapable de résister aux vents violents de ce jour-là, a apporté une touche d’humour surréaliste aux images de Stigter.
« Je n’ai jamais eu le temps de montrer à Monsieur Ueda les photos qu’il avait si sportivement rendues possibles. Ce n’est que l’annonce de son décès, en juillet 2000, à l’âge de 87 ans, qui a rappelé le travail que nous avions créé ensemble, et j’ai pensé qu’il était tout à fait approprié d’organiser une exposition montrant le travail qui se trouve maintenant aussi dans ce livre. »

En plus de la série Stigter et Ueda ensemble, le livre comprend également des photographies des réponses manuscrites de Ueda aux questions de Stigter, de courts textes de Stigter sur deux voyages à Tottori (une fois pour photographier Shoji Ueda, la deuxième fois pour visiter le musée Shoji Ueda) ainsi qu’un texte anecdotique de Yutaka Masutani, petit-fils de Shoji Ueda ; tous les textes sont en japonais, anglais et français
This photobook represents a delightful, playful homage to one of the great masters of Japanese photography: Shoji Ueda. Carrying an introductory letter written in Japanese, Dutch photographer Jeremy Stigter visited Shoji in Tottori Prefecture in the fall of 1993. Via the letter, Stigter posed three questions and asked Ueda to take his photographs in the nearby dunes that had served as the location of so many of Ueda’s unforgettable photographs. They picked up a fold-up umbrella along the way, which – unable to withstand the harsh winds that day – brought a surreal touch of humor to Stigter’s images.
“I never got around to showing Mister Ueda the pictures which he had so very sportingly made possible. It was only the announcement of his death, in July 2000, at the age of 87, that brought to mind the work we had created together, and I thought it only fitting to organize an exhibition showing the work now also contained within this book.”

In addition to the series Stigter and Ueda took together, the book also includes photographs of Ueda’s handwritten replies to Stigter’s questions, short texts by Stigter about two trips to Tottori (once to photograph Shoji Ueda, the second time to visit the Shoji Ueda museum) as well as an anecdotal text by Shoji Ueda’s grandson Yutaka Masutani.
