Vers l’Orient, un coffret de cinq ouvrages, véritable carnet de notes visuelles réunit les plus belles photographies prises lors de ce long et lent voyage entrepris pour rejoindre initialement Calcutta. Désireux de découvrir ces civilisations millénaires, il s’arrête d’abord à Istanbul, avant de poursuivre son chemin par les admirables paysages de Cappadoce et d’Anatolie. Il traverse la Perse pour rejoindre l’Afghanistan et ses zones tribales, comme l’avait fait peu de temps avant lui Nicolas Bouvier. En 1956, il arrive en Inde, qu’il sillonne pendant près d’une année. C’est de là qu’il entre en Chine communiste. Il termine son « Grand Tour » au Japon en 1958, alors en pleine reconstruction après la guerre et en pleine mutation sociétale. De retour en France, Marc Riboud ramène des milliers de photographies, traces de ces cultures ancestrales. Ceux qui connaissent l’Orient d’aujourd’hui découvriront peut-être dans ces photos réalisées il y a près de soixante ans ce qui reste quand tout semble changer, et, derrière l’occidentalisation grandissante, le fil caché de l’intemporalité ; photos en noir et blanc.

It is a veritable visual journal, bringing together the most beautiful photographs taken on this long slow journey that was initially undertaken to reach Calcutta. Desirous to discover these age-old civilisations, his first stop was Istanbul, before continuing on his way through the admirable landscapes of Cappadocia and Anatolia. He crossed Persia into Afghanistan and its tribal areas, as Nicolas Bouvier had done not long before him. In 1956, he arrived in India, his initial destination, which he explored for nearly a year. It was from there that he entered Communist China. He ended his “Grand Tour” in Japan in 1958, which was then undergoing full reconstruction after the war, and its society was rapidly evolving. Back in France, Marc Riboud brought home thousands of photographs, representing traces of these ancestral cultures. Those who know the Orient of today will perhaps discover in these photos – produced nearly sixty years ago – what remains when everything seems to change, and, behind its increasing Westernisation, they may glimpse a hidden thread of timelessness.
