S’inspirant de l’adage selon lequel voir c’est croire, le premier livre de la jeune photographe de Melbourne Sarah Walker, Second Sight, pose un regard cynique sur notre relation collective avec la spiritualité, la foi, le rituel et la recherche de sens. Utilisant la supercherie de la photographie, Walker recadre et s’approprie des fragments du quotidien pour les imprégner de l’atmosphère chargée de l’éphémère et de l’arcane. Le corpus d’œuvres qui en résulte s’avère aussi spéculatif et énigmatique qu’il est saisissant et dynamique – un espace où l’image de la lumière réfractée, de l’eau en mouvement ou des oiseaux en vol devient un repoussoir pour des gestes corporels en arc, des mains jointes, des arrangements de roches et abstrait, déconstruit portrait. Ici, nous nous retrouvons empêtrés dans l’artifice de cette quête effrénée de sens, où chaque instance devient un signe potentiel.

Taking its bearings from the adage that seeing is believing, the debut book from young Melbourne photographer Sarah Walker, Second Sight, assumes a cynical vantage on our collective relationship with spirituality, faith, ritual and the search for meaning. Utilising the trickery of photography, Walker reframes and appropriates fragments of the everyday to imbue them with the loaded atmosphere of the ephemeral and the arcane. The resulting body of work proves as speculative and enigmatic as it is arresting and dynamic – a space where the image of refracted light, moving water or birds in flight becomes a foil for arcing bodily gestures, clasped hands, arrangements of rocks and abstracted, deconstructed portraiture. Here, we find ourselves enmeshed in the artifice of this fraught search for meaning, where each and every instance becomes a potential sign.
