Née en Finlande, le travail de Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen a été très bien accueilli. The New Statesman a décrit ses photographies comme des « chefs-d’œuvre de la représentation – politique autant que photographique… », tandis que New Society a déclaré : « Voici une sensibilité, une sagesse de l’œil et du cœur qui rend cette collection inoubliable. Elle détient la distinction d’avoir fait visiter son travail en 1985 en Chine par le British Council comme première exposition photographique venue de Grande-Bretagne après la Révolution culturelle. Elle a continué à exposer largement.
Récipiendaire d’un MBE dans la liste des distinctions honorifiques du Nouvel An 2025 pour ses services à la photographie, Sirkka est membre fondatrice de Amber, un collectif unique de cinéastes et photographes basé à Newcastle, dans le nord-est de l’Angleterre, Konttinen travaille à la fois en photographie et en cinéma. Ses projets Byker, Step by Step et Writing in The Sand sont devenus des livres, des expositions et des films. L’écriture dans le sable est elle-même le point culminant de vingt-cinq ans de travail.

Finnish born, Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen’s work has attracted considerable acclaim. The New Statesman has described her photographs as ‘masterpieces of representation – political as well as photographic…’ whilst New Society said ‘Here is a sensibility, a wisdom of the eye and the heart that makes this collection unforgettable’. She holds the distinction of having had her work toured in 1985 in China by the British Council as the first photographic exhibition from Britain after the Cultural Revolution. She has continued to exhibit widely.
Awarded an MBE in the 2025 New Year’s Honours list for her services to photography, Sirkka is a founder member of Amber, a unique collective of filmmakers and photographers, based in Newcastle, in the north east of England, Konttinen works both in photography and film. Her projects Byker, Step by Step, and Writing in The Sand have each evolved into books, exhibitions and films. Writing in the Sand is itself the culmination of twenty five years work.
