‘China Dream’ explore l’identité brisée de la diaspora de la deuxième génération alors qu’elle chevauche son pays natal et sa patrie. Teresa Eng, dont les parents ont immigré au Canada de la Chine via Hong Kong, a cherché à explorer son territoire ancestral entre 2013 et 2017.
La connaissance culturelle de Teresa d’un pays dans lequel elle n’a jamais vécu contraste avec la réalité d’un pays en mouvement. Eng a été témoin de cycles constants de construction, de destruction et de reconstruction dans plusieurs villes et lleurs environnements. Cela a inspiré les couleurs délavées de ses images qui ont été réalisées dans la chambre noire.
Chaque visite offre un aperçu à un pays qui est en train de construire son avenir tout en reconstruisant et réinterprétant son passé, créant un nouveau type de culture. Les monuments et bâtiments historiques, détruits pendant la révolution culturelle, sont reconstruits au petit bonheur – souvent sous forme de fac-similés des originaux.
‘China Dream’ – le titre d’un calendrier patriotique trouvé dans un kiosque à journaux – était aussi un terme popularisé en 2013 par le secrétaire général Xi Jinping. ‘China Dream’ explores the fractured identity of the second generation diaspora as they’re straddled their birth country and their motherland. Teresa Eng, whose parents immigrated to Canada from China via Hong Kong, sought out to explore her ancestral homeland between 2013-2017.
Teresa’s cultural knowledge of a country which she has never lived, contrasts with the reality of a country in flux. Eng witnessed constant cycles of construction, destruction and reconstruction across multiple cities and its surrounding towns. This inspired the stripped back colours of her images which were achieved in the darkroom.
Each visit offered an insight to a country that is in the process of building its future while simultaneously reconstructing and reinterpreting its past, creating a new type of culture. Historical monuments and buildings, destroyed during Cultural Revolution are being rebuilt haphazardly – often as facsimiles of the originals.
‘China Dream’ – the title of a patriotic calendar found at a newsagents –was also a term popularised in 2013 by General Secretary Xi Jinping. It also alludes to the American Dream, where hard work and entrepreneurial spirit will lift up each individual and the nation into prosperity.
