Les photographies de Zofia Kulik sont un collage psychique du moi. Inspirée par l’érotisme, le féminisme et les développements politiques et sociaux de la Pologne d’après-guerre, son œuvre expansive offre une critique radicale non seulement de ce que signifie être une artiste et une femme, mais aussi de ce que cela signifie d’être humain. Mettant en vedette sa série la plus importante – y compris The Splendor of Myself – cette publication expansive retrace sa carrière riche et variée, allant de ses collaborations antérieures en tant que KwieKulik au développement de son travail solo.
Peu après avoir obtenu son diplôme de l’Académie des beaux-arts de Varsovie en 1971, Kulik a formé le duo artistique KwieKulik avec son partenaire d’alors Przemyslaw Kwiek. Dirigeant le Studio de Documentation et d’Activités de Propagation (PDDiU) depuis leur domicile à Varsovie, le duo a créé des films, des photographies et des objets avant-gardistes, ainsi que des performances, des installations et des textes interventionnistes. Après sa séparation en 1987, Kulik a exprimé un désir nouveau d’être présente dans les musées et institutions. Par la suite, développant les photomontages en noir et blanc pour lesquels elle est maintenant la plus célèbre, Kulik combinait des motifs complexes avec souvent des centaines d’images. Minutieusement détaillées et souvent physiquement imposantes, ces images reflètent un artiste engagé à explorer les terrains troubles de la psyché.
Réunissant ces œuvres essentielles aux côtés des projets moins connus mais non moins radicaux de Kulik, ce livre présente des textes complets mais accessibles d’écrivains de premier plan pour offrir une introduction bien nécessaire à l’un des artistes vivants les plus importants de Pologne.

Inspired by eroticism, feminism, and the political and social developments of post-war Poland, her expansive work offers a radical critique of not only what it means to be an artist and a woman, but of what it means to be human. Featuring her most pivotal series – including The Splendor of Myself – this expansive publication charts her rich and varied career, journeying from her earlier collaborations as KwieKulik to the development of her solo work.
Shortly after graduating from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in 1971, Kulik formed the artistic duo KwieKulik with her then partner Przemyslaw Kwiek. Running the Studio of Documentation and Propagation Activities (PDDiU) from their home in Warsaw, the pair created avant-garde films, photographs and objects, as well as performances, installations and interventionist texts. After splitting in 1987, Kulik expressed a new-found desire for her work to be present in museums and institutions. Subsequently developing the black-and-white photomontages for which she is now most famous, Kulik would combine complex patterns with often hundreds of images. Painstakingly detailed and often physically imposing, these images reflect an artist committed to exploring the murky terrains of the psyche.
