“Dans son premier poème publié, Baudelaire envoie Don Juan aux enfers rejoindre ses maîtresses qui se tordent de douleur sous le noir firmament. Il s’inspire là d’une sorte de téléscopage visuel d’une lithographie de Guérin avec un tableau de Delacroix sur Dante et Virgile. Don Juan se retrouve ainsi aux enfers, pris entre les pages des Paradis Artificiels baudelairiens ! Il n’en fallait pas plus pour que cette situation singulière nous donne l’envie de consacrer un numéro de Camera International à la femme et l’engager ainsi dans un projet poétique en ces temps où la photographie semble plus préoccupée par son rapport avec le réel.”

“In his first published poem, Baudelaire dispatched Don Juan to join his mistresses in Hades, where they were writhing with pain beneath the murky sky. His theme was inspired by a kind of visual telescoping between a Guérin lithograph and a Delacroix painting of Dante and Virgil. That’s how Don Juan ended up the Inferno, imprisoned between the pages of Beaudelarian Paradis Artificiels! This curious situation was enough to give us a yen to dedicate an issue of Camera International to Woman, involving her this way in a poetical project when in this ay and age photography appears to be more concerned with its relation to the real.”
