Ralph Eugene Meatyard est mort en 1972 à l’âge de quarante-six ans, au sommet de son art. Opticien et homme d’affaires à Lexington, dans le Kentucky, il photographiait durant les week-ends. Bien qu’il s’aventurât rarement loin de chez lui, il rappelle l’expérience de Thoreau qui disait avoir « beaucoup voyagé dans le Concord ».
Ralph Eugene Meatyard died in 1972 at the age of forty-six at the height of his powers. He was an optician and businesseman in Lexington, Kentucky, who photographed on the weekends. Although he seldom ventured far from home he reminds one of Thoreau’s experience of having ‘traveled far in Concord’.

Longtemps inédit et reproduit ici en fac-similé, New York, N. Why? est un livre unique, entièrement fait à la main, comprenant 67 photographies et sept sonnets. Aujourd’hui conservé dans les collections du Metropolitan Museum of Art de New York, il rassemble nombre des images les plus célèbres de Burckhardt, brillamment mises en séquence autour de trois thèmes urbains : la publicité, les piétons et le mobilier urbain.
This remarkable album is a collaboration between Rudy Burckhardt, one of the great New York photographers of the 1930s and 40s, and his companion and lifelong friend, the poet and dance critic Edwin Denby. Previously unpublished, and reproduced here in facsimile, New York, N. Why? Is a unique, handmade book containing 67 photographs and seven sonnets. Now in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, it contains many of Burckhardt s best-known images, dazzlingly sequenced into three urban themes – advertising, pedestrians, and street furniture.
