Réalisées en privé entre 1984 et 1999 et conservées pour la plupart pour elle-même pendant plus de trente ans, les images de Tender constituent un autoportrait complet et personnel d’une jeune femme noire queer explorant intimement le domaine de ses propres possibilités.
Tender is the first monograph by artist Carla Williams.
Made in private between 1984 and 1999 and kept mostly to herself for more than thirty years, the images in Tender comprise a complete, personal self-portrait of a young, queer, Black woman intimately exploring the realm of her own possibility. -

Entre 1979 et 1986 — après Stonewall et avant les jours les plus sombres de l’épidémie de sida —, il y a eu une période de vie gaie exubérante et florissante dans des endroits même alors connus sous le nom de « paradis gais ». Il y en avait d’autres, mais les plus connus étaient Castro District de San Francisco, Christopher Street et Fire Island de New York, et Provincetown, Massachusetts.
Between 1979 and 1986—after Stonewall and before the darkest days of the AIDS epidemic—there was a period of exuberant and burgeoning gay life in places even then known as “gay paradises.” There were others, but the best known were San Francisco’s Castro District, New York’s Christopher Street and Fire Island, and Provincetown, Massachusetts.
