Tatu Gustafsson : I on the Road / Weather Camera Self-Portraits, 2012-21
Le premier livre de Tatu Gustafsson se compose de 200 autoportraits pris avec des caméras de surveillance météorologique. Depuis qu’il a commencé à réaliser des autoportraits en 2012, Gustafsson s’est concentré sur une approche alternative de la photographie et a cherché à remettre en question les questions d’auteur associées à la photographie traditionnelle. Très tôt, il a découvert que les caméras de surveillance du trafic et des conditions météorologiques en Finlande prennent une photo toutes les douze minutes et la stockent en ligne pendant 24 heures. Gustafsson a entrepris un voyage en voiture à travers le pays, se plaçant devant plus de 700 caméras extérieures et acceptant le manque de contrôle inhérent à ce processus. Les résultats sont des images envoûtantes qui capturent l’essence de la solitude.
Tatu Gustafsson’s first book consists of 200 self-portraits taken with weather monitoring cameras. Since Gustafsson started making self-portraits in 2012, he has concentrated on an alternative approach to photography and sought to question issues of authorship associated with traditional photography. Early on, he discovered that Finland’s traffic and weather cameras snap a picture every twelve minutes and store it online for 24 hours. Gustafsson embarked on a journey by car across the country, positioning himself in front of over 700 outdoor cameras and embracing the lack of control inherent in this process. The results are haunting images that capture the essence of solitude.

Photobook Week Aarhus (Denmark) is a small festival dedicated for a decade to the photographic book as a medium of artistic production. This year, they have published Talking about Photobooks, a a publication that draws on the experiences and learnings of these the last ten years.
The contributions are based on artist talks, panels, keynote speeches and presentations in the framework of the festival, edited and revisited to reflect the main aspects of the photobook.

Il a placé ses membres du public de Paradiso sur un fond neutre (les carreaux des toilettes, un mur dans le couloir) et les a photographiés en noir et blanc contrastant frontalement et avec désinvolture.
He drank with them, partied with them and started talking to them. From 1980 onwards he took his old Rolleiflex camera and a good flash with him and took over a thousand portraits. He placed his choice of Paradiso audience members against a neutral background (the tiles of the toilet, a wall in the hallway) and photographed them frontally and casually in high-contrast black and white.

Bertien van Manen : I am the only woman there
De manière assez formelle et distante, Bertien van Manen (1935-2024) montre les femmes migrantes ou les épouses des migrants qui sont venues aux Pays-Bas dans le cadre du regroupement familial. Des femmes turques, marocaines, tunisiennes, espagnoles, yougoslaves et italiennes ont été photographiées dans leur lutte pour survivre dans une culture étrangère. Bertien van Manen a photographié les conditions de vie souvent primitives, le travail, les fêtes et les loisirs. Le livre est un appel à l’action du mouvement des femmes en général et du secrétariat des femmes de la Fédération syndicale néerlandaise (FNV) en particulier.
In a fairly formal and distant manner Bertien van Manen (1935-2024) shows the female labour migrants or the wives of labour migrants who came to the Netherlands in the context of family reunification. Turkish, Moroccan, Tunisian, Spanish, Yugoslavian and Italian women were photographed in their struggle to survive in a foreign culture. Bertien van Manen photographed the often primitive living conditions, work, parties, and leisure activities. The book is a plea for action from the women’s movement in general and the women’s secretariat of the Dutch Trade Union Federation (FNV) in particular.

The Blondes présente 42 portraits photographiques du projet « Blond » d’Olaf Nicolai, qui a eu lieu dans un salon de coiffure du quartier commerçant de Tilburg, aux Pays-Bas.
Pendant un mois, le salon de coiffure de Nicolai a offert la teinture de cheveux avec un spécialiste de la couleur fournissant des conseils sur les 7 nuances de blond disponibles. Les images qui en résultent présentent les participants du projet en cadrage tête-épaule sur fond neutre, rappelant le format impersonnel des photos d’identification. Les images sont imprimées sur du papier épais très brillant avec des perforations pour faciliter le retrait et l’affichage. La couverture arrière en carton épais montre une grille de photos « avant », complétant l’expérience visuelle de la transformation d’identité difficile.
The Blondes showcases 42 photographic portraits from Olaf Nicolai’s “Blond” project, which took place in a hair salon in the shopping district of Tilburg, the Netherlands.
For one month, Nicolai’s salon offered complimentary hair dying with a color specialist supplying advice about the available 7 shades of blond. The resulting images present the project’s participants in head-and-shoulder framing against neutral backgrounds, calling to mind the impersonal format of identification photos. The images are printed on high-gloss heavy paper stock with perforations for easy removal and display. The heavy cardboard back cover shows a grid of “before” photos, completing the visual experiment of uneasy identity transformation.
