Asia Calling est une revue d’art du photographe de longue date du Moyen-Orient Edward Grazda qui retrace ses décennies passées à parcourir le monde en période d’immenses changements sociaux et culturels sur le continent asiatique. Tout comme Peter Beard et Bill Burke avant, les entrées de journal de Grazda et les graphiques diaristiques, ainsi que sa manipulation d’images et les positions conceptuelles de ses photographies et écrits font de ce pas un simple carnet photo, mais plutôt un timbre indélébile, un passeport graphique si vous voulez, de personnes et de lieux, figés dans le temps, mais maintenant vivants avec des juxtapositions revigorantes et un séquençage dynamique, une récapitulation photographique d’un lieu et d’un temps partis depuis longtemps mais toujours là.
À partir de 1980, Grazda se rend à Hong Kong, en Thaïlande, en Birmanie, au Vietnam, au Laos, en Inde, en Chine, au Pakistan et en Afghanistan. C’était une période de changement en Asie – la mondialisation, les guerres, les drogues, le tourisme et la religion ont refait les traditions ethniques et les gouvernements. Les photos de Grazda, avec quelques textes fictifs et littéraires, sont un passeport pour le passé.
Edward Grazda est né à Queens, New York (1947), et a obtenu son BFA de RISD en 1969. Il a photographié aux États-Unis, en Amérique latine et en Asie. Les livres publiés comprennent : Afghanistan Diary 1992-2000 (2000), NY Masjid : The Mosques of New York (2002), A Last Glance : Trading Posts of the Four Corners (2015), Mean Streets : NYC 1970-1985 (2017) et On the Bowery : NYC 1971 (2019), tous de powerHouse Books. Le travail de Grazda se trouve dans les collections du MoMA, The Met, New York Public Library et SFMoMA à San Francisco. Asia Calling is longtime mid-east photographer Edward Grazda’s art journal recap of his decades traversing the globe during times of immense social and cultural change in the Asian continent. Much like Peter Beard and Bill Burke before, Grazda’s journal entries and diaristic graphics, along with his image manipulation and conceptual positionings of his photographs and writings make this no mere photo notebook, but rather an indelible stamp, a graphic passport if you will, of people and places, frozen in time, but now alive with invigorating juxtapositions and dynamic sequencing, a filmic recap of a place and time long gone but still there.
