“HK:PM, Hong Kong Night Life 1974-1989, montre la ville que j’ai découverte à l’adolescence, et que j’ai habitée pendant quinze ans. Pendant ce temps, je voyais rarement des photographies ou d’autres visuels qui décrivaient adéquatement la ville dans laquelle je vivais, sauf peut-être dans les films de gangsters de l’époque. Alors j’ai essayé de faire le mien. Les photographies à HK:PM ont été pour la plupart faites avant que je devienne un photographe de magazine, et donc il n’y a jamais vraiment et “histoire” en dehors de la Hong Kong où je vivais. While making these pictures in the 1970s and 80s, Greg Griard was guided to some degree by the notion that they should be revealing somehow, not just to himself or other visitors, but to people who knew Hong Kong. Today these pictures have no doubt acquired some sort of historic or nostalgic cachet but at the time. He was simply trying to make pictures that corresponded with the way Hong Kong looked and felt. Apart from scenes in certain Hong Kong gangster films of the period (A Better Tomorrow, for example) it was rare to come across anything visual that registered what it felt like to be in the city, especially at night ; with an introduction by acclaimed Hong Kong film director Ann Hui.
“HK:PM, Hong Kong Night Life 1974-1989, shows the city I first discovered as a teenager, and later lived in for fifteen years. During this time I rarely saw photographs or other visuals that adequately described the city I was living in -except perhaps in gangster movies of the period. So I tried to make my own. The photographs in HK:PM were for the most part made before I became a magazine photographer, and so there was never really and showed “story” apart from the Hong Kong I was living in. Today they may have some historical or nostalgic value but at the time I was trying simply to make pictures of what it looked and felt like to be there.
I first visited Hong Kong in 1974, and made several later visits in the 1970s and early 1908s, before moving to the city in 1982.
