Remontant à la fin des années 1830, le nu est l’un des premiers genres de la photographie. Pourtant, malgré sa longévité, elle a peu évolué au fil du temps, restant régie par trois principes centraux : le drame du noir et blanc est préféré à la couleur plus naturaliste; c’est principalement le corps féminin qui est représenté; et enfin, si le corps est masculin ou féminin, la photographie nue est presque toujours faite par et pour le regard masculin.
Avec (ça.ra.ma.ru), l’un de ses premiers travaux, Takano Ryudai a fait un premier pas sur un chemin bien fréquenté et souvent trop étroit. Photographiée en séances multiples — ou plutôt en performances pour la caméra — au cours des trois dernières années, la série part d’une simple prémisse : une invitation du photographe à un groupe de danseurs Butoh à incarner le karamaru (à enchevêtrer). Stretching back to the late 1830s, the nude is one of photography’s earliest genres. Yet despite its longevity, it has evolved little over time, remaining governed by three central tenets: the drama of black and white is preferred to more naturalistic color; it is primarily the female body that is depicted; and finally, whether the body is male or female, the nude photograph is almost always made by and for the male gaze.
With (ca.ra.ma.ru), one of his earliest bodies of work, Takano Ryudai took a first step onto a well-trodden and often overly narrow path. Photographed in multiple sittings—or rather performances for the camera—over the course of three years, the series began from a simple premise: an invitation by the photographer to a group of Butoh dancers to embody karamaru (to be entangled).
