No Man’s Land parle d’un cercle fermé de personnes dans un petit village sur l’île suédoise d’Öland. Ici, les agriculteurs vivent côte à côte avec une communauté d’artistes. Leurs vies et leur travail sont étroitement liés. Les agriculteurs s’impliquent dans des projets artistiques et les artistes aident à l’agriculture. Après y avoir vécu pendant de nombreuses années, Simon Johansson connaît bien les villageois. Il a vu la dynamique de près.
« En décrivant la vie quotidienne dans le village, je décris l’ambition commune de signifier quelque chose pour les autres ; de faire partie d’un contexte », dit Simon Johansson. « Le point de départ du projet est ma propre expérience lorsque ce contexte m’a été retiré. La fin d’une relation s’est transformée en un traumatisme émotionnel. Il s’agit de la façon dont ma vie dans le village s’effondre, et comment je quitte ensuite un endroit très aimé.
No Man’s Land is about a close circle of people in a small village on the Swedish island of Öland. Here, farmers live side by side with an artist commune. Their lives and work are intertwined. The farmers become involved in art projects and the artists help with the farming. After living there for many years, Simon Johansson knows the villagers well. He has seen the dynamics close-up.
“By portraying everyday life in the village, I describe the common ambition to mean something to others; to be part of a context,” Simon Johansson says. “The starting point of the project is my own experience of when that context was taken away from me. The end of a relationship turned into an emotional trauma. It’s about how my life in the village is falling apart, and how I then leave a much-loved place.”
