Jitka Hanzlová a fui la Tchécoslovaquie pour l’Allemagne de l’Ouest en 1982, où elle a étudié la photographie à Essen. Sa biographie façonne les thèmes centraux de son œuvre : l’exil, la mémoire et l’identité. Le catalogue de l’exposition ALBERTINA présente dix de ses séries les plus importantes, dont une qui est publiée pour la première fois : Rokytnik (1990–94) est dédiée au village natal de l’artiste du même nom, Forest (2000–05) à la forêt de son enfance. Plus tard, elle a créé des séries de portraits en milieu urbain, comme Østz (1994–96) et Femme (1997–2000), qui explorent la relation entre l’individu et son environnement.
Jitka Hanzlová fled from Czechoslovakia to West Germany in 1982, where she studied photography in Essen. Her biography shapes the central themes of her work: exile, memory, and identity. The catalog for the ALBERTINA exhibition features ten of her most important series, including one that is being published for the first time: Rokytnik (1990–94) is dedicated to the artist’s home village of the same name, Forest (2000–05) to the forest of her childhood. Later, she created portrait series in an urban environment, such as Bewohner (1994–96) and Female (1997–2000), which explore the relationship between the individual and their surroundings.

Within the vast expanse of the Brazilian Amazon forest thrives a community known as the Ribeirinhos or river dwellers. These tales are intricately woven into the fabric of the Ribeirinho culture, enriching our understanding of the Amazon forest and the river dwellers’ profound connection with their environment.

Funafuti, l’un des neuf atolls qui forment l’État indépendant de Tuvalu, est un fragment de terre étonnamment minuscule émergeant dans le vaste océan Pacifique, mesurant à peine 2,8 kilomètres carrés. Intriguées par la présence humaine inattendue sur cette île lointaine, la photographe Julia de Cooker et sa sœur, l’écrivain Émilie de Cooker, s’y sont rendues pour apprécier sa culture particulière, conscientes de son sinistre destin : dans quelques décennies, Tuvalu sera submergée par la montée des eaux.
Funafuti, one of the nine atolls that form the independent state Tuvalu, is a surprisingly tiny fragment of land emerging in the wide Pacific Ocean, measuring barely 2.8 square kilometers.
