Le docu-fiction expérimental de l’artiste indien Abhishek Khedekar suit une troupe nomade de 100 personnes de ‘familles’ dalit interprétant Tamasha : une forme de performance itinérante combinant danse, musique et art visuel datant des années 1800. À mesure que l’Inde s’éloignait de la danse et des chants ruraux, Tamasha était stigmatisée, polarisée et reléguée dans la société indienne. Sillonnant l’état du Maharashtra, les images de Khedekar plongent dans la complexité de ce tissu socioculturel avec un éventail vertigineux de techniques artistiques en utilisant du matériel d’archives, du collage, de la photographie documentaire, de la performance, du son et de la vidéo.
Le bricolage de récits visuels expérimentaux de Khedekar élève l’attitude créative et sans prétention de la performance de Tamasha dans une esthétique unique de la chanson, de la communauté et de l’expression : situer les traditions de Tamasha dans l’Inde moderne.
Khedekar est le lauréat de Publishing Performance 2022 : un prix de résidence et d’édition axé sur les intersections de la photographie et de la performance. Khedekar a développé son travail en tant qu’artiste en résidence aux studios Mahler & LeWitt à Spoleto, en Italie, pour un livre qui sera édité, conçu et publié par Loose Joints.
Indian artist Abhishek Khedekar’s experimental docu-fiction follows a 100-person nomadic troupe of Dalit ‘families’ performing Tamasha: a travelling form of performance combining dance, music, and visual art dating back to the 1800s. As post-independence India moved away from rural dance and song forms, Tamasha became stigmatised, polarised and relegated in Indian society. Criss-crossing the state of Maharashtra, Khedekar’s images dive into the complexity of this sociocultural fabric with a dizzying array of artistic techniques by utilising archival material, collage, documentary photography, performance, sound and video.
Khedekar’s bricolage of experimental visual narratives elevates the make-do, unpretentious attitude of Tamasha performance into a unique aesthetic of song, community and expression: situating Tamasha’s traditions in modern India.
Khedekar is the recipient of Publishing Performance 2022: an artist’s residency and publishing award focused on the intersections of photography and performance. Khedekar developed his work as artist-in-residence at Mahler & LeWitt Studios in Spoleto, Italy, for a book to be edited, designed and published by Loose Joints.
