Après que Raphe reçoit pour son anniversaire une machine à voyager dans l’espace-temps, les deux frères partent pour un périple qui les entraîne loin dans le passé, où ils se retrouvent bientôt bloqués, incapables de revenir à la réalité. À travers des photographies de famille, ils revivent des années d’aventures passées, notamment d’épiques batailles de pistolets à eau, des explorations dans le désert, de fabuleux châteaux de sable, ainsi que tous les chiens, chats, tortues et serpents qu’ils ont jamais connus. Ils voyagent si loin dans le passé qu’ils assistent à la parade de Thanksgiving de Macy’s en 1935 et retrouvent des ancêtres dans l’Allemagne d’avant-guerre et la Russie tsariste. Noah, qui voyage avec la crainte constante de devoir manger un haricot de Lima, finit par décider qu’ils pourraient peut-être revenir à la réalité en s’y rendant en voiture — dans une voiture démolie récupérée dans une casse !

Rebecca demonstrates her « bellybutton defense » to Noah, Gabe, and Raphe, the main characters of I Like to Eat Right on the Dirt. After Raphe recieves a space-time memory machine for his birthday, the two brothers fo off on a journey that takes them far into the past, where they soon get stuck, unable to return to reality. Through family photographs, the re-live years of previous adventures, including epic water gun battles, desert explorations, fabulous sandcastes and all the pet dogs, cats, turtles and snakes they have eve known. They travel so far into the past that they see the 1935 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and find ancestors in pre-war Germany and Czarist Russia. Noah, who travels with the constant dread of having to eat a lima bean, finally decides that they might be able to return to reality by driving there – in a demolished car taken from a wrecker’s yard! I Like to Eat Right on the Dirt contains hundreds of photographs made over a decade by the boys’ father, photographer and filmmaker Danny Lyon and from albums made by their grandfather, Dr. Ernest F. Lyon ; edited by Nancy Lyon and Daniel Jesse Wolff.
