La réimpression par Only Photography de la série phare des années 1970 de Kazuo Kitai « To the Villages » (Mura-e) présente les superbes photographies de Kitai de villages japonais au format 320mm x 240mm.
La série est contextualisée par un texte d’introduction écrit par Kazuo Kitai lui-même et un long essai de Koji Taki qui a été publié pour la première fois dans le magazine Asahi Camera en 1977 (les deux textes en japonais et en anglais).
« Dans cette édition de To The Villages by only photography, [l’éditeur] Roland Angst a lui-même arrangé et choisi les photographies parmi 350 tirages vintage de l’époque des séances photographiques. 80 % de ces photos n’ont jamais été publiées auparavant et j’avais envie de revoir To The Villages pour la première fois, juste après avoir pris les photos.
Jusqu’à présent, To the Villages avait été publié trois fois, sous la forme de livres structurés différemment, comme l’édition spéciale To the Villages de 1976 de Asahi Camera, le livre de 1980 To the Villages de Tankosha Publishing et le Nippon de Toseisha Publishing des années 1970 en 2001. Pour tous ces trois livres, j’ai fait la structuration photographique. Cependant, dans cette édition de To the Villages by only photography, Roland Angst a lui-même arrangé et choisi les photographies parmi 350 tirages vintage de l’époque des séances photographiques. 80% de ces photos n’ont jamais été publiées auparavant et j’avais envie de revoir To the Villages pour la première fois, juste après avoir pris les photos. Je suis très reconnaissant qu’il ait donné aux photographies d’il y a quarante ans un nouveau souffle magnifique.
Depuis que je suis un jeune enfant, j’ai déménagé des maisons à plusieurs reprises et donc je n’ai pas un endroit que j’appelle la ville natale. Cependant, j’aspirais à une maison, essayant à plusieurs reprises de la voir dans les images à l’intérieur du développeur photographique qui se sont progressivement élevées à la surface sous l’ampoule rouge dans la chambre noire. Les paysages avec les gens et les paysages qui se reflètent dans les photographies étaient des lieux normaux où les gens normaux vivaient – ils existaient partout au Japon. Cependant, ils sont devenus des paysages perdus qui n’existent presque plus; seules les photographies restent, comme les propriétés perdues que l’époque a laissées derrière elle. » -Kazuo Kitai (introduction)

For all these three books, I did the photographic structuring. However, in this edition of To the Villages by only photography, Roland Angst has himself arranged and chosen the photographs from 350 vintage prints from the time of the photographic shoots. 80 percent of these photographs have never been published before and I felt like seeing To the Villages for the first time again, just after taking the photographs. I am very grateful that he has given the photographs from forty years ago a beautiful new breath.
Since I was a young child I have moved houses repeatedly and therefore don’t have a place that I call hometown. However, I yearned for a home, repeatedly trying to see it in the images inside the photographic developer that gradually rose to the surface under the red lightbulb in the darkroom. The sceneries with people and landscapes that are reflected in the photographs were normal places where normal people lived – they existed everywhere in Japan. However, they have become lost sceneries that hardly exist anymore; only the photographs remain, like lost properties that the era has left behind.“ (from Kazuo Kitai’s introduction)
