Connu pour ses photographies et installations tranquilles et poétiques, le nouveau portfolio de Yamamoto Masao marque son deuxième opus, après sa sortie en 2020 de « Birds ». La sélection a été faite en collaboration avec Benrido et l’artiste, et, comme ses œuvres précédentes, les tirages ont été fidèlement reproduits à partir des originaux aux tons sépia. De plus, certaines des œuvres de ce portfolio ont déjà été épuisées dans ses éditions originales, les rendant disponibles exclusivement sous forme de tirages en collotype.
Known for his tranquil and poetic photographs and installations, Yamamoto Masao’s new portfolio marks his second installment, following his 2020 release of “Birds.” The selection was made in collaboration with Benrido and the artist, and, like his previous works, the prints have been faithfully reproduced from the sepia-toned originals. Furthermore, some of the works in this portfolio have already sold out in his original editions, making them available exclusively as collotype prints.

Benrido Collotype Atelier
In the 1880s, the collotype printing process was introduced to Kyoto and by 1905 Benrido had begun producing collotypes. Collotype is one of the earliest forms of printing techniques and was invented in France in 1855 by Alphonse Poitevin as a method for photographic fine art printing. Due to the high level of print and archival quality, it has since been used primarily as a way to reproduce and preserve Japan’s National Treasures and cultural properties.
Today Benrido Collotype Atelier remains as one of only a few studios left in the world capable of producing fine colour collotype prints.
As part of Benrido’s mini-portfolio series, Yamamoto Masao mini-portfolio brings together a selection of well-known works focusing on his imagery of birds. Within a selection of six previously published images have been selected by the artist and printed in colour by the collotype printers at Benrido studio.
