Nothing Lasts Forever est la première monographie rétrospective de l’œuvre de Peter Mitchell, plus connu pour ses chroniques de la ville de Leeds. Le livre est publié pour coïncider avec une grande exposition du travail du photographe à la Leeds Art Gallery du 17 mai 2024 – 06 octobre 2024, près de 50 ans depuis qu’il y a exposé pour la première fois.
Le livre sert de guide visuel pour guider la relation poétique et enracinée de Mitchell avec Leeds. Considéré comme l’un des plus importants photographes en couleur du XXe siècle, le livre illustre comment les mots et les objets ont également joué un rôle clé dans le développement de sa vision distinctive et accessible.
Nothing Lasts Forever retrace le travail et la carrière de Mitchell à partir de ses premières photographies prises dans les années 1970 et 1980, alors qu’il travaillait comme chauffeur de camion. Son point de vue l’éloigne de l’immédiateté de la rue et il développe son cadrage graphique distinctif des bâtiments et des paysages qui révèlent les couches d’histoire urbaine et sociale. Sa documentation de la disparition du domaine Quarry Hill a établi son travail au-delà du simple visuel dans celui d’un historien social et conteur, combinant des documents originaux, des photographies d’archives, l’histoire orale, et des observations pour illustrer les complexités du changement et de l’échec.
Le livre présente ses capacités de narration uniques allant d’une nouvelle réfutation de la mission spatiale Viking 4 qui imagine un explorateur extraterrestre en visite à Leeds avec un degré de surprise et de perplexité, jusqu’à la réinterprétation de sa propre autobiographie par des objets inanimés, observés en silence par des épouvantails du Yorkshire.

Nothing Lasts Forever Is the first retrospective monograph of work by Peter Mitchell, best-known for his chronicles of the city of Leeds. The book is published to coincide with a major exhibition of the photographer’s work at Leeds Art Gallery from 17 May 2024 – 06 October 2024, nearly 50 years since he first exhibited there.
The book acts as a visual guide to navigate Mitchell’s long-rooted and poetic connection with Leeds. Regarded as the one of the most important early colour photographers of the 20th century, the book illustrates how words and objects have also played a key role in developing his distinctive and accessible vision.
Nothing Lasts Forever charts Mitchell’s work and career from his early photographs made in the 1970s and 80s whilst working as a truck delivery driver. His vantage point removed him from the immediacy of the street and he developed his distinctive graphic framing of the buildings and landscapes which reveal the layers of urban and social history. His documentation of the demise of the Quarry Hill Estate established his work beyond the mere visual into that of a social historian and storyteller—combining original documents, archival photographs, oral history, and observations to illustrate the complexities of change and failure.
The book introduces his unique storytelling abilities ranging from A New Refutation of the Viking 4 Space Mission which imagines an alien explorer visiting Leeds with a degree of surprise and puzzlement, through to the re-telling of his own autobiography by inanimate objects silently observed by otherworldly Yorkshire Scarecrows.
