Ron Galella – le roi sans couronne des paparazzi
Ron Galella (* 1931 dans le Bronx) a déménagé à Los Angeles au début de la vingtaine, où il a suivi une formation de photojournaliste. Pendant son temps libre, il a pris des photos des stars arrivant aux premières de films, les vendant au National Enquirer et à Fotoplay. Ses photos sont des instantanés plutôt que des portraits – spontanés, non mis en scène et extraordinairement authentiques. Que ce soit Jacqueline Kennedy, Marlon Brando, Greta Garbo, Andy Warhol, Sean Penn, Robert Redford, Muhammad Ali, Madonna, Mick Jagger ou Audrey Hepburn, Galella a réussi à les mettre tous devant son objectif. En plus des agressions physiques, son approche photographique lui a également valu d’être poursuivi en justice – il a dû promettre à Jacqueline Kennedy de ne plus la prendre en photo tant qu’il vivrait. Andy Warhol, d’autre part, l’adorait et Elizabeth Taylor a utilisé ses images dans sa biographie.
En plus de ses photographies spontanées de paparazzi, Galella a également réalisé des mises en scène, commandées par des magazines tels que Time, Rolling Stone, VOGUE ou Vanity Fair. La publication présente plus d’une centaine de ses étonnantes photos.

Ron Galella—the uncrowned king of the paparazzi
Ron Galella (*1931 in the Bronx) moved to Los Angeles in his early twenties, where he trained as a photojournalist. In his free time he took pictures of the stars arriving at film premieres, selling them to the National Enquirer and Fotoplay. His photos are snapshots rather than portraits—spontaneous, not staged, and extraordinarily authentic. Whether Jacqueline Kennedy, Marlon Brando, Greta Garbo, Andy Warhol, Sean Penn, Robert Redford, Muhammad Ali, Madonna, Mick Jagger, or Audrey Hepburn—Galella managed to get them all in front of his lens. In addition to physical assaults, his photographic approach also caused him to be sued—he had to promise Jacqueline Kennedy not to take another picture of her again as long as he lived. Andy Warhol, on the other hand, adored him, and Elizabeth Taylor used his images in her biography.
In addition to his spontaneous paparazzi photographs, Galella also took staged pictures, commissioned by magazines such as Time, Rolling Stone, VOGUE or Vanity Fair. The publication presents more than one hundred of his astounding photos.
