Le photographe et le poète se rencontrèrent à Bâle, en Suisse, en 1934, puis s’installèrent l’année suivante à New York. Là, Burckhardt chercha instinctivement ce que les autres négligeaient : les tableaux abstraits et modernistes des bouches d’incendie, conduites, corniches et colonnes ; le collage ready-made des kiosques à journaux et des vitrines ; ainsi que la chorégraphie complexe des piétons filant et se croisant aux intersections bondées. Un essai d’accompagnement de Doug Eklund, conservateur associé au département des photographies du Metropolitan Museum, examine l’album en relation avec les films contemporains de Burckhardt, les écrits pionniers de Denby sur la danse à la même époque, ainsi qu’avec les origines de la New York School en peinture, photographie et poésie.

The photographer and poet met in Basel, Switzerland in 1934 and moved the following year to New York. There, the Burckhardt instinctively sought out what others overlooked: the abstract modernist tableaux of fire hydrants, standpipes, cornices, and columns; the readymade collage of newsstands and storefronts; and the complex choreography of pedestrians darting and weaving through crowded intersections. An accompanying essay by Doug Eklund, Associate Curator in the Department of Photographs at the Metropolitan, examines the album in relation to Burckhardt s contemporaneous films, Denby’s pioneering writing on dance from the same moment, and the origins of the New York School in painting, photography, and poetry.
