Boundary Hunt, du photographe Japonais Toshio Shibata, est une série réalisée au Japon et aux Etats-Unis entre 2000 et 2004, une période pendant laquelle l’artiste expérimentait de nouvelles techniques et réorientait sa pratique vers la photographie couleur après deux décennies de travail en noir et blanc. Pour Boundary Hunt, Shibata a utilisé le Type55 de Polaroid, un film noir et blanc positif à négatif récupérable qui permettait ensuite un agrandissement de l’image.
Dès ses débuts en tant que photographe au début des années 1980, Shibata a identifié l’infrastructure comme son sujet de prédilection, car elle est à la fois évocatrice du monde contemporain tout en restant hors du temps.
Le titre de la série évoque à la fois l’intersection entre le monde naturel et artificiel où Shibata situe sa pratique, mais aussi la bordure inhabituelle créé par le film Type 55 autour de l’image. Après quelques premiers essais, Shibata a décidé d’intégrer ces bordures aux images de la série, car ils semblaient entrer en dialogue avec ces paysages mêlant éléments naturels et béton. Une chasse qui se poursuit à la frontière de ces deux mondes.
L’ouvrage Boundary Hunt contient 34 photographies en noir-et-blanc, dont la plupart sont publiées ici pour la première fois.
Boundary Hunt, by Japanese photographer Toshio Shibata, is a series made in Japan and the United States between 2000 and 2004, a period during which the artist was experimenting with new techniques and shifting his practice towards colour photography after two decades of working in black-and-white. For Boundary Hunt, Shibata used Polaroid’s Type55, a black-and-white positive film with a recoverable negative that allows the image to be enlarged.
From his early days as a photographer in the early 1980s, infrastructure has been Shibata’s central subject, as it is both characteristic of the modern world and unchanging over long periods over time.
The title of this series evokes both the intersection between the natural and man-made world in which Shibata situates his practice, and the unusual border created by Type 55 film around the image. After some initial attempts, Shibata decided to integrate these borders into the images of the series, as they seemed to enter into a dialogue with these landscapes mixing natural elements and concrete. A hunt that takes place on the border of these two worlds.
