Pour la première fois en deux décennies, l’œuvre de Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932) est présentée dans ce cadre, avec 271 estampes originales. Cette exposition impressionnante dévoile un corpus photographique développé dans le cadre de l’éducation artistique et découvert comme approche artistique indépendante quelques années avant la mort de Blossfeldt. Aujourd’hui, son travail est considéré comme un classique de l’histoire de la photographie, souvent cité aux côtés d’August Sander et d’Albert Renger-Patzsch. Les photographies de Blossfeldt sont considérées comme des prototypes pour les mouvements Nouvelle objectivité et Nouvelle vision.
For the first time in two decades, Karl Blossfeldt’s (1865–1932) oeuvre is being presented in this scope, featuring 271 original prints. This impressive exhibition unfolds a photographic body of work that was developed in the context of art education and only discovered as an independent artistic approach a few years before Blossfeldt’s death. Today, his work is considered a classic in the history of photography, often mentioned alongside August Sander and Albert Renger-Patzsch. Blossfeldt’s photographs are primarily regarded as prototypical for the New Objectivity and New Vision movements.

The Blondes présente 42 portraits photographiques du projet « Blond » d’Olaf Nicolai, qui a eu lieu dans un salon de coiffure du quartier commerçant de Tilburg, aux Pays-Bas.
Pendant un mois, le salon de coiffure de Nicolai a offert la teinture de cheveux avec un spécialiste de la couleur fournissant des conseils sur les 7 nuances de blond disponibles. Les images qui en résultent présentent les participants du projet en cadrage tête-épaule sur fond neutre, rappelant le format impersonnel des photos d’identification. Les images sont imprimées sur du papier épais très brillant avec des perforations pour faciliter le retrait et l’affichage. La couverture arrière en carton épais montre une grille de photos « avant », complétant l’expérience visuelle de la transformation d’identité difficile.
The Blondes showcases 42 photographic portraits from Olaf Nicolai’s “Blond” project, which took place in a hair salon in the shopping district of Tilburg, the Netherlands.
For one month, Nicolai’s salon offered complimentary hair dying with a color specialist supplying advice about the available 7 shades of blond. The resulting images present the project’s participants in head-and-shoulder framing against neutral backgrounds, calling to mind the impersonal format of identification photos. The images are printed on high-gloss heavy paper stock with perforations for easy removal and display. The heavy cardboard back cover shows a grid of “before” photos, completing the visual experiment of uneasy identity transformation.

Xiomara Bender : Waiting for the Rainbow ; Ten Years in North Korea
La Corée du Nord est un pays que les gens connaissent très peu. À l’ère de l’information, c’est un peu paradoxal. Peut-être est-ce précisément ce manque d’information et l’incapacité de “simplement chercher sur Google” qui explique la fascination pour ce pays. Sans parler du fait qu’il est difficile de “juste se faire une idée”. Xiomara Bender a passé beaucoup de temps en Corée du Nord et a non seulement été en mesure de prendre des photos incroyables sur une période de dix ans, mais a également rencontré de nombreuses personnes et vécu de nombreuses histoires qui lui ont donné un aperçu unique d’un pays. Nous lui avons parlé de sa motivation pour voyager dans ce pays et de ce qui déplace les habitants derrière la façade de l’isolement en tant qu’État.
North Korea is a country about which people basically know very little. In the information age, this is something of a paradox. Perhaps it is precisely this lack of information and the inability to “just google it” that explains the fascination with this country. Not to mention the fact that it is difficult to “just get an idea for yourself”. Xiomara Bender has spent a lot of time in North Korea and has not only been able to take amazing photos over a period of ten years, but has also met many people and experienced many stories that have given her a unique insight into a country. We spoke to her about her motivation for traveling to this country and about what moves the inhabitants behind the facade of isolation as a state.

Hedda Morrison : Hong Kong as it was ; Hedda Morrison’s Photographs 1946-47
Hedda Morrison était une photographe magistrale. Ses photos, aperçues dans un rapport gouvernemental de 1946, incitèrent Edward Stokes à chercher ses négatifs – découverts des années plus tard à la bibliothèque Harvard-Yenching de l’Université Harvard. Hedda Morrison was a masterful photographer. Her photos, sighted in a 1946 government report, prompted Edward Stokes to search for her negatives – discovered years later at Harvard-Yenching Library, Harvard University. Hedda Morrison’s images now show Hong Kong in 1946 – 47, little had changed from the 1930s to the early 1950s.

Cette fois, l’objet est le sanctuaire de Dieu de la Terre, trouvé généralement par les portes des magasins et des maisons à travers Hong Kong.
Following the success of Hong Kong Corner Houses (2011), German photographer Michael Wolf continues with his collaboration with Hong Kong University Press to produce Small God, Big City. Michael again uses his creative eye to draw attention to overlooked objects in the visually rich urban environment of Hong Kong. This time, the object is the Earth God shrine, found commonly by the doorways of shops and homes throughout Hong Kong.
