Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-1879) est reconnue depuis longtemps comme l’un des photographes les plus novateurs et influents de tous les temps. Elle a été la première à utiliser le close-up, a fait du portrait son sujet, a cherché l’inspiration dans les arts aussi variés que la peinture de la Renaissance italienne et la poésie victorienne contemporaine, et a chéri la beauté au-dessus de la perfection technique.
Cameron reçut son premier appareil de sa fille et de son gendre en 1863, à l’âge de 48 ans, et sa réponse au don fut immédiate : “dès le premier instant j’ai manipulé mon objectif avec une tendre ardeur, et il est devenu pour moi une chose vivante, avec voix et mémoire et vigueur créatrice”. Au cours des onze années qui suivirent, Cameron produisit des milliers de photographies, exposa à l’étranger et publia deux livres. La photographie est devenue le lien de Cameron avec certains des plus grands écrivains, artistes, scientifiques et penseurs de son temps, des poètes Alfred, Lord Tennyson et Henry W. Longfellow et le peintre G.F. Watts au naturaliste Charles Darwin, l’astronome John F. Herschel et l’historien et philosophe Thomas Carlyle. Ses sujets comprenaient également plusieurs études d’Alice Liddell, qui, enfant, avait été assise pour le photographe et écrivain Lewis Carroll et avait inspiré les aventures d’Alice au pays des merveilles; et un portrait remarquablement tendre et moderne d’Ellen Terry, une des actrices les plus populaires de son temps.
Le Victoria and Albert Museum (comme le South Kensington Museum) fut, dès 1865, le premier musée au monde à exposer l’œuvre de Cameron, moins de deux ans après qu’elle eut commencé à prendre des photos. Aujourd’hui, le V&A abrite la plus grande collection de photographies de Cameron.

Julia Margaret Cameron (1815–1879) has long been recognized as one of the most innovative and influential photographers of all time. She pioneered the use of close-up, made the portrait her subject, sought inspiration in the arts as varied as Italian Renaissance painting and contemporary Victorian poetry, and cherished beauty above technical perfection.
Cameron received her first camera from her daughter and son-in-law in 1863, aged 48, and her response to the gift was immediate: “from the first moment I handled my lens with a tender ardour, and it has become to me as a living thing, with voice and memory and creative vigour”. Over the eleven years that followed Cameron produced thousands of photographs, exhibited internationally and published two books. Photography became Cameron’s link to some of the greatest writers, artists, scientists and thinkers of her day, from the poets Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Henry W. Longfellow and the painter G.F. Watts to the naturalist Charles Darwin, the astronomer John F. Herschel and the historian and philosopher Thomas Carlyle. Her subjects also included several studies of Alice Liddell, who, as a child, had sat for photographer and writer Lewis Carroll and inspired Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland; and a remarkably tender and modern-looking portrait of Ellen Terry, one of the most popular child actresses of her day.
